mid-2012 retina macbook nvidia gpu panics

Hi, my mid-2012 retina keeps crashing while using the nvidia gpu. I partially solved this by using gfxcardstatus and forcing the mac to use the intel card, but this is really frustrating anyway.

My question is if there's any repair/replace program for this specific model (like with the 2010 15-inch macbook pro).

I even did a clean reinstallation of mountain lion and this keeps happening. I'm not 100% sure, but i think this started happening since the 10.8.4 update.

Here's the log from one of the many panics i've had:

I'm having the same issue on the same model (Mid 2012). It was really bad at one stage where the computer would shut down immediately as I logged in. However, after doing a SMC Reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964) and a NVRAM/PRAM reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379) it stablilized a lot - although I'm still getting GPU Panics.

I also reisntalled OSX but am still getting GPU Panics. I'm getting it checked at the Genius bar soon, but the issue is it's very hard to replicate.

Symptoms started for me on 19 September 2013 (EST).

So far, a pattern I've found (since the resets and reinstalls) is it occurs when:

  • I'm at work, I close the computer and put it in my laptop bag. I open it up about an hour later at home, however it has shut down and when I start the computer, it shows the GPU Panic in the logs.
  • I'm at home, I closed the computer and put it in my laptop bag. I open it up 25 minutes later and it has shut down and when I start the computer, it shows the GPU Panic in the logs.

The variables that change in these points are:

  • WiFi network is different;
  • The computer has been in sleep with battery powered whilst in transportation -- it could be heating up although it's not unusually hot?

Oct 2, 2013 6:34 PM in response to Goran Stefkovski

Have exactly the same issue (15" Mid-2012), got panic almost every day. Left it with "Geniuses" for 3 days, they re-installed OS and "couldn't find any issues", but when I was picking up and powered on computer in the Apple Store -- got _exactly_ the same crash report. Girl, who was completing return, just said "I don't know what it is, my report states that there's no problem with the computer, maybe it's software" (they just installed fresh OS).

Very frustrating. I could expect such response from M$, but Apple seems to be getting there too...

Same thing here folks. There is another thread that explores this issue as well.

Given that this was happening with the 2010 Macbook pro it seems to be a reoccuring issue with apple - GPU panic problem due to the logic board. My experience was that I went to the Apple Store and talked an a "Genius" - who had a huge ego. After reading your reviews I suppose I am glad that he diagnosed me with the correct problem. His response was to book me a 400 dollar repair without getting my feedback. So I stopped him and said, "I don't like that solution." To which he replied, "Well sir, next time my suggestion is that you purchase a 3 year warranty." To which I replied, "I though I was purchasing a high quality peice of equipment. I have had this computer slightly over one year and my logic board is malfunctioning... I have taken exeptional care of this machine. It is defective. I want it replaced." To which he responded, "OK then I will set you up for a replacement as I said it will be 400 dollars." Sooo...... I left very angry and I am still very dissapointed in apple in general. I paid big money for a machine that should work. I love everything about it, but it is defective recall it.

I don't know what we can do, but continue to report these problems and flag the number of occurences - it seems like this will become more common as individual warranties expire and people face having to pay 400 - 900 dollars for the fix that really is a defective part that needs to be recalled.

@dmitria -- that doesn't sound right from Apple. I would call Apple Care Phone Support, they can coordinate this for you.

The Hardware tests all passed ok for me too. As before, when the OS was reinstalled, it didn't panic as much, but it did start again and kept getting worse. (It may have had to do with the unit heating up to a certain temperature level -- but I don't known.)

Understandably, it took a number of weeks to finally get to the bottom of the issue and have the hardware replaced due to the difficulty in replicating and debugging the issue, but in the end Apple fixed it.

I think you should call Apple Care and discuss with them before taking it into store again if your symptoms keep persisting.

Nov 12, 2013 9:53 PM in response to Goran Stefkovski

Update in my case: After 3 discussions with Apple Care guys (issue was escalated) they were finally convinced that there's a problem with hardware and recommended me to go to the Apple Store (again) for repair. Fortunately I could reproduce crash at the store and one of the "Geniuses" couldn't even boot machine after this crash, which was probably the main reason why they replaced motherboard, or at least they said they did... because, after I pick up computer this morning and started loading my working tools, it crashed AGAIN.

Re-installed Mavericks, ran simple GPU test - crash. Erase SSD, fresh install with no third party tools/etc - same crash. Now can reproduce this issue within 10 minutes just by loading CPU with anything (endless loop in bash script works too)...

Just to make sure I'm not insane, tried all the same tests with latest MBP (had to buy another one) -- all good.

Tomorrow I'm taking this MBP to Apple Store for a third attempt to fix it. I wish Apple had some kind of "three-strikes policy" as some of Apple Care "alternatives", who promise brand new device in such cases...

Jan 14, 2014 3:15 PM in response to dmitria

I agree Dmitria, there should be some kind of policy where if they just can't fix it, they should just replace the device.

I am in the same situation with the same model, and 3 months later of persisting I still don't have a fix after multiple attempts by Apple Care and Genuis Bar (all of whom have been very curteous and apologetic).

1 - Apple Care talked me through reseting PRAM etc via a phone call - issue re-presented itself after 5 days

2 - Appointment at Genius Bar where they ran diagnostics and found what they thought was some kind of conflict in the Maverick install, and which they thought could be the issue. Issue re-presented itself after 2 days

3 - Appointment at Genius Bar where they took the machine in for testing 24 hours. The machine passed the tests but they carried out an erase and, Fresh install etc just to be sure. Issue re-presented itself after 2 hours.

4 - Appointment at the Genuis Bar where they took the machine, and replaced the logic board. Issue re-presented itslef after 12 days.

5 - Latest appointemt at Genius Bar, where they said that with the logic board having been replaced it doesn't make any sense that there was still a fault, but nevertheless I was able to show them videos I'd taken of the machine crashing last week, even twice within 30 seconds and eventually becoming unresponsive. They took the machine in 4 days ago and I'm waiting to hear what the next proposed fix will be

Apparently, I'm now what they call a "Priority Looper", as the case just goes on and on.

It seems that just replacing the logic board like for like (if indeed that is what they had done) doesn't necessarily fix the issue.

In the meantime, I'm using my old 2008 Macbook. Bit slow, but hasn't crashed once.....!

Jan 14, 2014 3:42 PM in response to paul808

My issue was finaly resolved, after two replaced logic boards (and hours spent with phone support and in store). It seems like MBP boards have design flaw, like poor temperature control, which affects some customers and Apple refuses to admit it, because it may require massive wave of replacements (or class action if they refuse to fix it free for out-of-warranty devices).

Jan 14, 2014 3:47 PM in response to alfredoreduarte

Mine keeps having these issues. Actually I think the situation has worsened: now the screen is always off when I turn the machine on, and only wakes up after I close the lid for a moment. Apparently it starts up with the faulty nvidia gpu and then switches to the working intel graphics chip.

Worst thing is, I live right in the middle of south america and there's no apple store I can go to. And it's gonna be kinda difficult to sell this macbook at a decent price to buy one of the newer ones.

F**k you, flawed first version.

Apr 22, 2014 2:28 PM in response to alfredoreduarte

Same issue here. Got my macbook pro retna 15" in Aug 2012. Over the last couple of months the crashes have become more frequent where now it's crashing on me upwards of 6 times a day. Seems to happen more frequently when closing my screen, but it happens pretty much whenever now. I don't have apple care, so it sounds like i'm pretty much out of luck.

I think there is a solution that will allow you to continue using your Nvidia GPU, and therefore use external displays, etc. I have tried disabling GPU switching and using the gfxCardStatus solution, but many OSX applications simply over-ride these. I applied this today after suffering the regular OSX crash and GPU panic on my mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro ever since upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. Apple introduced Memory Compression in order to make more memory available to the apps currently in use. Switching this off seems to have the effect of speeding up older Macs that have been struggling to run memory-hungry apps since upgrading OSX version and also seems to cure the GPU panic crashes. To disable memory compression open Terminal and run this command:

sudo nvram boot-args="vm_compressor=1"

You will be prompted to enter your system password. No further response will be received, all you need to do is reboot and cross your fingers!
