I have a the mac app store app, but it says that it needs 10.7 OS X or later to run it which doesn't make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

What version of App store do you have?
On different versions of Mac OS, I have found:
On OS 10.6.8, it's App Store.app version 1.0.2
On OS 10.7 it's 1.1.2
On OS 10.8. it's 1.2.2
So if your OS is 10.6.8 you are running the wrong version of App Store.app
So how do I get the correct version
it tells me when i try to open it that it is for 10.7. I thought there was a version of the app store for snow leopard?
Any way, where would i go to get a dl link for the 1.0.2 version?
This is included when you install OS 10.6, which is how I got it. A quick google search did not give any obvious links.
If you know anyone running 10.6, you can copy it off that computer. This is the only way if there is no download link to be found.
Alternatively you could reinstall OS 10.6 from the OS DVD.
If there's no backup or other mac available - the 10.6.8 combo update contains a working version, which can be updated with the security update to match the one that should be there.
I'd use Pacifist to extract just the app store from each update - since it's faster than letting the installers run.
Do you have the OS Snow Leopard DVD?
I already ran both of those and the app store app continues to not respond. thanks though

You ran them with the existing Lion app store 1.1.2 still in place, by the sound of it. Update installers won't necessarily overwrite what they rightly see as a later version..

Try it. But first, as andyBall_UK has advised, you should trash the existing App Store.app,
Alternatively, use Pacifist (another of andyBall_UK's suggestions).

This is useful, for instance, if an application which is installed by the operating system becomes damaged and needs to be reinstalled without the hassle of reinstalling all of Mac OS X, (my emphasis)
So Eustace, I wandered around school today asking all my mac friends which OS X they were running. I found someone running 10.6.8, copied the app and currently am trying to install mountain lion, will let you know how it works, thanks!
so, i can access the app store now, but whenever I sign in it says unknown error although i have reset the password already, so i guess no go on the copying the app thing, going to go through with the pacifist things to see how that works
im in pacifist, and i can't find the app store going through the install disc search option., any help?
The app store wasn't available until 10.6.7
Pull it from the combo update, then the security update - although it sounds as if you've already got app store 1.0.2 - right ?
In that case -If you're getting errors, test in a new user account, & if it works there, we know it's cookies or a preference file in your usual one.
I can't update from snow leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion. Safari crashes whenever I get to the macappstore page.
