I have checked the filters, plus view options, and did the basic repairs on the library, but no joy.
When I delete the images, I can locate them in the apple finder trash.

Are they still in the Aperture Trash? You won't see them in the system trash until you empty the Aperture Trash.
Aperture Trash and the system trash are two entirely different containers. Nothing in Finder trash shows in Aperture Trash, and nothing in Aperture Trash shows in Finder Trash.

I deleted the images and they went into the aperture trash (it showed the number of versios beside "trash"), but they were not actually shown.
So, I emptied the aperture trash, and was able to view them in a folder "aperture" in the finder trash - bit late though.
So, I am trying to figure out how to actually view the images when they are sitting in th eaperture trash,
Done all the rebuilds and stuff in the library (hold alt and cmmd then open aperture), but no luck.
Have not been brave enough to delete some of the folders regarding trash.
Vault, store, backuo up to date so maybe just start over.

If you really checked all the filters, and done all library repair options (including "Rebuilding") you may have an invisible filter. Try the "Double Double Reverse Caggiano", as Kirby once named it: See Frank Caggiano's User Tip:
Images not appearing in browser, search filter is cleared
If that does not work, post back please. Kirby is a master in applying this fix.
If it is not an invisible filter, check, if Aperture's trash is also apparently empty, when browsing a different Aperture library. If yes, you may be having a problem with corrupted preferences files. Then remove the user preferences, as described here: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics
See the paragraph "Delete the user preferences" in the middle of the page-

Hi,
I think it was you who suggested this leonie;
I deleted the trashalbum.apalbum and trashfolder.apfolder, then did a data base rebuild.
I can now see what images are sitting in the trash folder prior to deleting, and if I send them to the system trash I can also have a last look before I completely delete them
Many thanks for your help; means I do not need to re-install Aperture.
I am guessing that something just got corrupted in the files.

That is really good to know, Rockyfour, that this method is still working. I saw that solution first posted by Frank Caggiano in this thread: Re: "Merging Library" is stuck, but that was several Aperture versions ago. So I was not sure about recommending surgery on the Aperture library, before we knew for sure, that the library needs patching.
Aperture. I am using an external drive to store all my masters. If I delete a ref version, it goes into the aperture trash, but I cannot view it.
