Mac upgrade?

I've got a macbook I bought back in august 07. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Now I want to upgrade to mountain lion but can't. Is that 'cos my mac is too old? I'm quite happy with it and would rather not have to fork out another £1000+ to buy another one. Anyone got any suggestions?
