Q: Getting the "cannot get mail, password is incorrect" message with my AOL account only.

Getting the "cannot get mail, password is incorrect" message with my AOL account only. Could this have something to  do with the iOS 7 update? When I log into my mail through safari it's fine, and I deleted it from my phone and went to go add it back but now I can't because it keeps telling me my password, which is correct, is incorrect. Has anyone else had this issue since iOS 7? How can I fix it?

I've been having a bit of a problem with my phone. I have an iPhone 4 and use iOS7. Here's what happens to me:

I go to Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > Add Account > Google (for my Gmail).

Once I enter in my correct information (My name, Gmail, and Gmail password), I get a message saying "Cannot Get Mail: The username and password for imap.gmail.com is incorrect."

So I turn off my phone, turn it back on again, go to Settings and do the process all over again, and I get the same "Cannot Get Mail" message every single time I try to enter in my Gmail username and password.

I can't delete and reinstate my email again because I can't add it to begin with.

What can I do? I need urgent help!

I had the exact same issue with Hotmail.  For me, the issue was that I had the 2 step verification security setting enabled on my hotmail account.  Iphones and ipads won't work with this setting.

Go into Hotmail on your computer.  Disable the 2 step verification process in your security profile.

Delete the mail account on your iphone.  Re-add.  Put in your correct password, and voila!  It finally worked!

    SOLVED

    Hi there,

I struggled with this issue too but it has a simple solution.

It is based on creating a two step verification code for the app you are going to use your mail through and generating a specific password for the app.

It is best explained in this video:

As usual, results may vary. This worked for me:

    Mail pulldown

    Accounts

    AOL

In this window DESELECT the "notes" option

    et voila!

I think maybe the update default selected "notes" along with "mail" - who knows. Anyhow, it fixed mine.

I think i might have one possible option to fix this. I've had this problem pop up multiple different times, and I thought that changing the password on AOL would fix it. It seemed to work a few times, but this last time it wasn't working. I noticed in the Internet Accounts settings on OS X for the AOL account that the Notes box was checked. I unchecked Notes and it instantly accepted the password.

It seems that if the iCloud account settings are set up for things that the specific webmail account doesn't support, then it won't accept the password. It would be nice if it would just pop up and say, "AOL doesn't support Notes" or something along those lines rather than say the password is wrong.

So try de-selecting everything other than Mail under the "system preferences->Internet Accounts"and see what happens.

TThis worked for me!   I was even on the phone with Apple and couldn't get to work.  I finally logged onto my AOL account via Safari  and realized the two step security code would prevent me from changing my password.  When I turned it off ....IT WORKED INSTANTLY!

Worked for me too, not with AOL but BTYahoo. Same symptoms after changing p/w on desktop. It's the user name in the outgoing server - removing "@btinternet.com" seemed to be the answer. Thanks Kamikins
