My MacBook Pro screen went black at the login screen

So recently my 2007 MacBook Pro has been turning black upon booting up. It hasn't been an issue and after a while I've always been able to get it going but now it won't respond at all. Upon starting up I see the apple and the spinning wheel and then as soon as it gets to the login to an account page the screen shuts off instantly. If I press the power button and shine a flashlight at my screen I can see the screen very very dimly. After 5 or so seconds since I had pressed the power button the screen goes completely off again. Another note is that when I can very dimly see the screen the laptop is functional just extremely slow glitchy. Please help.

I have the same issue, same year macbook pro (loyal friend), running mountain lion.

In addition, it has been running VERY slow lately, I need to shut down, let it rest 5/10 mins and re-start to be able to do some work.

I have the activity monitor in the dash, and when it slows down and the spinning wheels starts bugging me, activity monitor displays plenty of memory BUT a lot of page outs and swaps.

Another weird thing it does: after I completely shut it off and wake up the next day, or come back from work, I find it on (even when it was completely closed!) It has restarted like this many times. It is not hot, and memory. page outs and swaps are in 0, but it is still weird. And must not be good for the life of the pro.

What I do know:

  1. battery needs replacemement, not even charging.
  2. I love my pro, and would,'t like to replace it yet if I don't have to. I backed everything up, no longer saving stuff in it, prepared for the worse. But I am not in a hurry to go for retina... don't need that.
