Are you using Time Machine?
If so, where are the TM backups being stored?
Hi, yes I'm using TM and I thought I was using "My passport" but am now having doubts. As you can see I'm no expert. Thanks for your help.
Thanks, I've just checked on System Preferences and TM is using my external disk, and has been doing so for more than a year. So I can't understand why on installing ML it tells me that TM is being used by my "macHD" whereas the System Pref. tells me the opposite.

Serach your system disk for a file with the extension of backupdb.
If you find one that could cause the installer to think that the disk is being used by TM.
Delete it and see if it works then.

I'll have a look and get back to you in due course.
Richard.
There is a folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the startup volume. Delete it.
Really great, deleted the folder and solved the problem.
GRAZIE.
