Imported .mp4 videos won't play in iTunes if media kind changed

I have been trying to import several .mp4 files from my finder into iTunes. I had this problem before the most recent upgrade to 11.1. Immediatley upon import, I can launch. However, it imports into the "home video" tab where it doesn't belong. If I change the type to "movie", It will not launch when I press play. I am dragging and dropping from the finder into iTunes. I also tried file>add to library and had the same issue. It appears that if I were to leave it as a "home video", it would work fine. However, if I change it to "movie", it becomes a dead file. Changing it back to "home video" does not fix the file. What gives? Am I importing it wrong?

Same problem, however I notice that when I attempt to play the movies I have imported (into Home Videos), they do not play at all. Instead, I can navigate chapters, frames, fast-forwarding, etc., but it won't actually play. It doesnt matter if I have marked them as watched/unwatched, Movie/Home Video, or anything else. These movies were ripped from DVD to iTunes ready .m4v files (with the original DVD Surround Sound audio) using the program "Handbrake" (fully updated version). QuickTime plays the movies just fine, and allows me to turn on/off the subtitles. If QT can play it, there should be no reason for iTunes not to play them, so I just don't understand.

I was having this exact same problem. The only thing I can find is the resolution: 720p files, I can change from 'home video' to 'movie' without any issue. 1080p files do exactly what you described when I try to switch the media kind. I'm not really a computer person, so I don't know if that's the actual issue, or how to change movies from 1080 to 720, but I know I was extremely frustrated just not knowing why it wasn't working, so I thought I'd mention this.

I am also now having this issue. I have never experienced this before with any other movie I have transferred to iTunes. I can play them in QuickTime but not iTunes. They open in iTunes but it won't play...and like smkralik said, it lets you navigate the movie EXCEPT watch it. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing has remedied the issue. Hopefully, someone can come up with a fix.
