iGoogle replacement?
With iGoogle going away on November 1, what would you recommend as a replacement?
With iGoogle going away on November 1, what would you recommend as a replacement?
Not a recommendation so much as a starting point for a search:
Wikipedia says "iGoogle (formerly Google Personalized Homepage), a service of Google, is a customizable Ajax-based startpage or personal web portal (much like Netvibes, Pageflakes, My Yahoo!, and Windows Live Personalized Experience)." This suggests to me that one of the named services might do what you want. You would have to investigate them to determine which you would prefer, if any.
I'll be following this discussion and hoping that you'll get some good suggestions.
I've been living with the "iGoogle will not be available after November 1, 2013" message for so long now, that I've learned to ignore it. I refuse to use Chrome, preferring Firefox which I've used for over a decade. But I hate that Google is taking iGoogle away - and the MSN 'live' just doesn't cut it for me.
Looking forward to some good recommendations!
Clinton
This website provides a review of 6 good alternatives, of which I have been testing a few:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/6-great-alternatives-igoogle.htm
My preference turns out to be Symbaloo (www.symbaloo.com).
It is easy to customize, it has an app for the iPhone, and for iPad you can make a bookmark in Safari or select it as your Safari start page. On iPad it has an even better user interface than iGoogle (not to speak of Netvibes, which is horrible on iPad.)
I have been working with Netvibes for more than a year - I find uncomfortable (especially for use with iOS), slow, widgets are difficult to find, and many do not work at all.
Hope this helps.
Karin
Thanks so much for both the link and the recommendation of Symbaloo... it looks as if it's going to be the 'best fit' for me as well as MSN, Yahoo, etc., just don't cut it.
Luckily, I have no iGoogle documents that I have to save. I just think that it's sad that iGoogle only has a month to 'live'.
Thanks, again,
Clinton
Clinton - welcome. But you could also integrate Google documents, if you had those. There is a widget (or tile) for this. And if you cannot find a specific tile, you create one of your own by adding a link.
Good luck. Karin
Karin,
I'm just about to watch the video about using Symbaloo... it looks like a rich replacement for iGoogle and I'm sure that I'll be discovering, during the next couple of weeks, exactly what my transition will end up being!
Thanks,
Clinton
I would like to suggest you http://www.startme.com as igoogle alternative.
