You can also choose to hide your purchases from iTunes in the cloud when you delete them from your library. You can still retrieve them but it requires extra steps of going into your account settings to restore hidden purchases.

So if I don't want the song, I'm stuck with it? Most of my "purchase" history are songs I didn't pay for in the first place, but I don't want them taking up space in the icloud. We're only given, what, 5 gigs of space? I truly appreciate the "free" space, but if I'm forced to keep things that simply take up that space, the term "free" takes over a new mean .
You're past purchases don't contribute to your iCloud usage. You can delete the song and download it again any time you want, or hide the purchase if you actively dislike it. Either way it makes no difference to your available cloud storage.

No. You can delete it from your computer and/or devices. Icloud simply allow you to redownload it IF you so choose.
" Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, TV shows, and Photo Stream don’t count against your free storage."
Oooooh, I see, thank you! You both have made my day!
