error 6 when restoring iPhone 3G any help?

I just got a iPhone 3 G given to me, that I am going to acctivate when I got the phone it would go to the start up screen with icons no problem, but once I added wifi to it it bricked to dfu mode on me. I have been trying to restore the device to factory with itunes and keep getting error 6. I have even went and bought a new sync cord and tried all usb ports with my firewall down, what else will fix this? I would like to get it functional soon.
