Songs are greyed out with a dotted circle next to them and won't sync

I added some songs to my iTunes library today from CDs and downloads outside of iTunes. There are also other songs that aren't working which have been purchased from iTunes via my phone. I've been trying to sync them Ito my iPhone 5 for hours but they won't. My iTunes is set to sync the whole library and they are ticked as well. They appear fine in the library and play but when I go to my phone and 'on this iPhone' they are greyed out and there is a dotted circle on the left of them. All the other songs are going onto my phone fine, it's just these ones. My iPhone is on ios7 and I updated iTunes to the most recent version today before trying to sync. How can I get them to sync

I am having a similar problem, but it seems to be with CDs that I have imported into iTunes. They play on my Mac book pro, but won't sync to my phone (iPhone 6) and didn't sync to my iPhone 5 either. When I click on "on this phone" tab the songs show up as greyed out with the dotted circle. However, there are some songs from the same album that transferred and some that didn't. My most recent import from CD, none of the songs will sync. When i pull them up in the library they are listed as AAC audio file. any suggestions?

Thanks...

Jerrill - thank you thank you thank you!

I never had a problem syncing iPhone 5 before tonight's IOS 8.0.2 upgrade, which I elected to do *just prior* to syncing new mp3s. Following the upgrade, neither my new playlist nor the files within it would sync. Instead, I got the greyed out / dotted circle syndrome described by the original poster.

A Google search led me to your response, which led me to iFunbox. But I thought, first, I'll take the path of least resistance, and reboot both my PC and iPhone. However, this did not fix the problem, so I held my breath, opened iFunbox, and deleted the contents from Raw File System ->Purchases. Voila! - upon very next sync, all playlists and files showed up on my iPhone perfectly..

I don't know how you ever thought to try that particular fix, but I and the rest of your fan club are happy you did! Thank you again for posting your workaround!

Hi All

I'm having a similar issue I think. When I tell ITunes v11.4 to copy Tracks to my iPhone5 with iOS8 from my windows 8.1 PC's iTunes Library it seems t o go well but then I notice several files never copied over.. I can wait forever and they don't seem to get there, however the track is listed with a clear dotted circle to its left. I can exit ITunes and remover and replace the iPhone and sometimes it wakes up and continues the copy but not always. I guess I need to try the file app suggested?

Any input is appreciated.

Hi JHB2001 and others
I just wanted to say I never tried the ifunbox fix but iTunes did start functioning properly for a while, but now it's back to it's old tricks again. Just to be complete I have not updated My iOS to 8.02 as yet. I'm using iOS 8.0 so it's not an 8.0.2 issue.

Thanks all.

Looks like this method is working for me as well. After deleting all purchased items using iFunBox, iTunes was still showing music on my phone. Had to uncheck "Sync Music", sync and uncheck, sync and uncheck 3 or 4 times. Very stubborn. Took a few syncs for all songs to be removed. Test batch of over 700 songs was successful, added 1100 the next time for a total of just under 1900. Only 7 songs did not sync. That I can live with! Thanks Jerrill.

It's interesting to see from the posts that this has been happening for about a year now, so it's not an iOS 8 issue.

I Had the same issue for months now if not over a year. I started to get really annoyed and tried to find the pattern when it happens. To be honest what I found I'm surprised that more people are not complaining. I'm not sure if I cover all cases but I found one pattern that always produces for me those grayed out songs. I buy a song with my iPhone and then next time I synch with my Mac the song disappears from iPhone and when I check it's grayed out. It happens all the time. I actually found another way to fix it. I convert the song to the same format (using script). What happens that the kind of song changes from purchased AAC to aac. Then I have to delete it from library and reimport. I need to do both steps. Doing either one doesn't fix. Can anyone confirm that my pattern to produce those grayed out songs Is not something tgat can be reproduced.

This did NOT work for me to fix the syncing of a few "Tones", but it sure seemed likely that it would... given the backwards nature of the stupid things you have to do to make basic stuff work in iTunes. Glad this has worked for some.

Still sitting here with stuff that won't sync, but iFunhouse (heh, iFunbox) is s super great free app to look at your file system without jailbreaking. 🙂

I downloaded ifunbox for mac and I'm in the raw data files > purchases but I can't delete anything? dragging it to the trash can does nothing and when I hit delete on my keyboard it just takes me back to the raw data files menu....really frustrated. Also, if I'm deleting purchases, am I not also deleting music form my itunes or is are these copies or something?

Songs are greyed out with a dotted circle next to them and won't sync
