"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." With "My Book For Mac" 3Tb External HardDrive?

I've purchased this item not to long ago and recieved the product about 20 minutes ago. As soon as i plugged it in i was notified with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Giving me three options to chose from: Initialize, Ignore, Eject.

Please help with any solution on getting this external hard drive to work correctly.

Note that i am not trying to recover any files just back up the ones already on my laptop. (I own a macbook pro.)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

I have a LaCie Porsche Design 4TB external hard drive, a little over a year old. The other when I started up my iMac (running El Capitan) I got the error message as posted by aliana702.

I tried plugging the hard drive into my Chromebook and got a similar message. The drive still powers up, so I'm guessing it hasn't crashed.

I'm hesitant on initializing it because I don't want to lose the data all together.

I tried to initialize my LaCie drive, as Mac OS Extended Journal with a Guided map, but I got another error that the operation failed.
