updated to ios 7, had contacts, then lost?

I updated my phone software and immediately after was on texting and everything was fine. I put my phone down and grabbed it again and my contacts disappeared! What the heck?! They were just there! I assume it was related to the update but find it strange that immediately after updating my contacts were fine. Some are there (mostly old numbers) but many contacts are now gone.

With earlier software my contacts would some times not show up on my "contact" app but their name and information would appear when I called/texted/etc. Is this related? Were they stored somewhere else and if so how can I get them back?! Please help!!
