Firefox and Safari won't open

I updated my mac a couple days ago and now nothing works. Safari and Firefox the wheel just spins. Chrome shows me the page then freezes and saids unresponsive. Mail works. Can not open system preferences. Have rebooted 5 or 6 times. Was wondering if I should try and download mountain lion, but not sure I could.

Upgrading to a newer OS X in most instances won't fix a browser issue, combined with the fact you can't open System Preferences, that's an indication that the startup disk needs repairng.

Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities

Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.

Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)

If DU reports errors, start up from your Mac install disc to make repairs.

Instructions here > Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X

If the startup disk appears to be ok, restore OS X from the instructions at that link.

Backup all important data before restoring OS X.

I could not tell from how you phrased your question whether you had updated to 10.6.8 OR updated from 10.6.8 to a higher level.

It now seems that the former is the situation. So did you update via the Combo updater ...Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1?

If so you should also have software updated to pull in certain security and iTunes updates to reach the current highest level.

Could you look in Apple menu > About this Mac > and tell me what version is written under the MAC OS X.

I can only suggest that you concentrate where possible on Safari. Chrome has been a problem for many, though not all, and some people have been happy to get rid of it. There are many things which can mess up your system, and Chrome's multiplicity of extentions is one of them.

I can suggest no more than to see if you can download the Combo using Safari.
