Aperture 2 Unsupported image - so what next?

As others have reported, some but not all of my images are suddenly showing up as 'unsupported' even though the previews are fine.

So I followed advice and after backing up did a rebuild of the library. Aperture sorted the problem out by simply deleting the images it didn't like. Next I tried going back to an earlier set of images but Aperture didn't like that either. It seems to me that the software has been updated and no longer likes some of my photos (all are JPEGs from the same camera). I can still get to the files, as JPEGs by going into the Aperture library but obviously can't edit or organise them.

So what do I do now? Is there a quick way I can get to the JPEGs which are still buried in Aperture directories without painstakingly going into each subdirectory and what should I use to edit them? I was thinking of finally getting round to upgrading to Aperture 3 but is it worth it? Am I going to get stuck with similar problems moving forward?

Aperture sorted the problem out by simply deleting the images it didn't like.

Usually the originals should have been collected in a special project "Recovered ...." after rebuilding the library. Has that not been the case? Look, if there has been such an album added to the library.

Aperture 3 has many improved features, and the latest version3.2.4, that is compatible with Mac OS X (10.6.8), is very stable. But if it will solve your "Incompatible images" problem, is hard to say, as long as we do not know the reason, why this happened. Try to solve the problem, while still running Aperture 2. If it happened because of hardware trouble or system trouble, upgrading Aperture will not help.

I cannot help with trouble shooting Aperture 2 - I did not use it long enough, but see this Guide:

Aperture 2: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2945

When upgrading from Aperture 2 to Aperture 3, it is important that the Aperture library does not have any glitches, otherwise Aperture may have problems when converting the Aperture library to the new format.

So all rebuilds and repairs should have been completed successfully, before upgrading.

This is recommended by Apple in the Aperture release notes, see: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518 (scroll down to the bottom of the page - A note on Upgrading).

Thanks for your help with this. There does not appear to be 'recovered' project or folder - strange.

I appreciate your advice on sorting this out before upgrading. I never upgraded before because I didn't thing Aperture 3 worked with Snow Leopard - did I get this wrong or did they later develop the compatibility?

Sadly the link for troubleshooting no longer works - thanks anyway.

I thought my problem was with Aperture but strangely I have managed to re-import versions of the bad images from Time Machine and gain access to them again. So it does look like they had become corrupted. The issue I now have is how to quickly find each image in the archived library and create a folder of these images as if I try to get Aperture to open archived library I either get error messages or it instead ignores where I am looking at and simply opens it's usual/current library. I will still then have the problem of reivewing which photos I need to recover and which I don't.

Aperture 3 was released on Snow Leopard. You can use it up to Aperture 3.2.4.The later iCloud versions of Aperture 3.3 and later require Lion and Mt. Lion.

Try again - for me that link works well 😕

I hope, an Aperture 2 expert will drop in.
