Q: How do I find a photo in new iOS7 photo app?

Can anybody help with the new Photo app on iOS7?

I have about 5000 photos taken around the world over the last fifty years. With the old Photo app, if I wanted to find a photo taken in (say) Argentina it was easy - just go to Places view, zoom to Argentina on the map, zoom to where I took the photo, and then click on a red pin. The map was a fabulous intuitive tool to easily find photos.

How do I do this now? The only way I have found is in "collections" where I have to try to remember what year I took the photo then squint through pages of minute thumbnails. I usually give up without finding the photo. Is there not an easier way?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.0.x), Thunderbolt

In Collections/Years, you can touch and skim ( a larger image will be shown) through the collections and stop if you want to see it full screen.

You can also tap the title example "Argentina" (left of the series) to view.

Actually, places is still there. For example, in the "Years" view you can tap the list of locations on the right side of a year and it will take you to a map of all the photos.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a global places view for all photos anymore.

So have I now got to tag all my photos in order to find them? This seems like a backward step to me. The photo map was so intuitive and a pleasure to use. Squinting through hundreds of tiny thumbnails, or having to tag them all is the sort of logic that Microsoft would use.

In reply to nacdenki, yes I know that a photo can be displayed on a map once I have found the photo, but this is not much interest to me.

Nono, you can actually display multiple photos on a map and no, they don't need to be tagged for that to work.

When you go into your Photos app, select "Photos" at the bottom, then go back until you reach the "Years" view. There you have your photos sorted by year and besides every year, a list of locations that you have visited is displayed. If you tap that list, all photos(!) from that year will be put on a map.

Still, this requires me to remember what year I visited (say) Philippines, scroll back through (say) 20 years of photos, then scroll through the locations I was in during that year. This all takes time and is frankly quite tedious and visually unpleasant.

Previously, I could just open the map, and zoom straight to Philippines.

No, the software is smart enough to use the photos META locations for the tags.

Yes, true. As far as I know there is no solution to that, then.

Yes, I realise that the software uses the meta data to label the photos, but it is still very hard to find photos. It requires a great deal of finger work and reading to do something that could previously be accomplished intuitively with a pinch-zoom on the map.

I find this new photo app a backward step compared to the old one. It is the sort of software that Microsoft would design - just not up to the former high standards of Apple.

BTW, I hope you saved the photos to computer like any other digital camera.

Have 5,000 photos on a small screen are hard to use anyway.

They weren't hard to view using the map!

Yes, I do have them on my Mac too, and I won't be upgrading to mavericks in case Johnny Ives also ruins that too!

Yes, have a look before you leap is a good idea.

I rang Apple support today about this issue. After a great deal of polite argument with a senior support person, Apple have agreed to exchange my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 for reconditioned replacements that still have OS6.1.3 on them, and so still have the Photo Map.

They accepted my argument that they should have warned in their own description of OS7 that Photo Map (and Wikipedia search on Spotlight) had been removed.

I am therefore off to the local Apple Store tomorrow to pick up the reconditioned items.
