i cant get my IPOD reset beyond 'checking with Apple' get error code 9 - multiple attempts

Hi - had a few problems with 3 year old ipod toucn 3rd gen. had to get a new connector put in via IPOD Doctor (Enfield) - solved it. Now, 3 months later - more problems - i cannot operate the IPOD - it was stuck in 'Apple logo' mode. Used internet to help me understand how to get it 'reset' mode ie USB and itunes logo on screen. I can get ITunes to recognise the Ipod needs resetting - but cannot get the process part getting error code 9 which indicates potential USB problems. I am prepared to lose my data as i have a back up - can anyone suggest how i could possible get past error code 9 and an effective reset....alll suggestions much appreciated.

Error 9

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
