why do i have multiple copies of the same photo, when i am in the iPhoto, in Iphoto/library/photos

I have run the duplicate finder, and still have multiple copies of photo's in my iphoto library. Is there a reason for this, should i manually delete the copies. by this time there are several thousand photos (counting all the duplicates). I have the latest version of Iphoto, and OSX mountain lion.

thanks

1 - I do not believe that duplicate finder is safe to use on the iPhoto library - their web site has no information indicating that it is safe and their video indicates that it is not safe - one of their other products - CleanMyMac2 has damaged or destryed several people's iPhoto libraries - I would not use it and recommend that no one does unless the autors show that it is safe for the iPhoto library - there are good, safe programs out there like iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - and dupplicate annihaliator

2 -

Where do you see this? Using iPhoto or the finder?

3 -

should i manually delete the copies

I would suggest using one of the proven safe programs - if you are going to manually remove them be sure to remember that you NEVER make any chnages to the structure or contents of the iPhoto library using the finder - only make changes using iPhoto

Hi,

I have the same issue , as I was looking thru pictures in my finder I noticed there were several copies of the same pictures I had taken yesterday. I just went thru all Seven copies of the pictures (accidental pics of my hands and the desk etc) and right clicked and moved them to trash, then I thought I'd look it up when I realized its not just these pics, but very many had een stored in groups of three or four.

1. Why is that?

2. Why is it advised to NEVER make changes to the structure or contents of iPhoto in Finder?

(as quoted Below)

Thank You All for your help.

1. Why is that?

Depends on where you saw them - If they were in the iPhoto library iPHoto has either two or three different versions (no duplicates) or each photos in its library - this is not optional and can not be changed -- If they were not in the iPhoto library then you can do what you please with them and they have nothing to do with iPhoto - iPhoto is only involved with the photos in its library

2. Why is it advised to NEVER make changes to the structure or contents of iPhoto in Finder?

Very simple - if you do you will destroy your iPhoto library and have to start over losing all work you have done in iPhoto - The iPHoto library is a SQLite database and there are NO user servicable parts in the iPhoto library and any changes made using teh finder will corrupt the database and cause dataloss

Is that a good enopugh reason for you?

So if these photos were in the iPhoto library when you

I just went thru all Seven copies of the pictures (accidental pics of my hands and the desk etc) and right clicked and moved them to trash,

You destroyed your iPhoto library and will either have to restore your backup from before you did this. put everything back EXACTLY like it was before or start over

My apologies for sounding redundant... I recently decided to clean up my iPhoto on my MAC OS X version 10.6.8 because I discovered I had hundreds of individual face pictures. Example: Took one picture of a group of 5 individuals and it created 5 single face shots. Additionally I notice there was also multiples of the same actually picture. I started to goggle suggestions / recommendations. It advised that I go "Finder" than to "All Images" and either view by Name or Date and Delete photos that are duplicate from here. I noticed under "name" that most of the multiples ended .jpg with one additional multiple ending with .JPG. After working on these for the last few nights deleting over 5K photo. I went into my iPhoto and noticed I am not able to open some of these pictures, I could see them in thumb nail but when I click to enlarge it gives me a triangle with an exclamation mark on it! Now panic sit in And I start to do more research and found what you wrote in regards to this. If I understand correctly I should have NOT made any changes or deletions from the Finder correct? So now that I have done this I should restore my back up? How do I do this? And / Or Did I corrupt my iPhoto Library if so will I still be able to restore if I emptied my trash?

Part II Once I resolve the above can you please explain or tell me how to prevent multiples or face creation from happening? I have no problem purchasing a program such iPhoto Library Manager as the one you mentioned previously however will this program help me the duplications or perhaps various versions?

Thank you for your time?

Yes when you deleted photos from the all images list you destroyed your library and you need to restore from a back up.

How you restore is totally dependent on what backup program you are running. Read it's manual or help for instructions

You can not change how iPhoto works. It does make small face thumbnails and it does keep several versions of each photo. For very good reasons. You can not change this. If you do not want this then you must find and use a different program. This is the way iPhoto works
