Should I connect my external hard drive with firewire 800 or USB?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), G Raid 4TB external hard drive

Depends on how fast you need to move data.

FW800 is nearly double the speed of USB 2.

Is USB 3 an option for your drive? That would certainly be fast.

except usb3 cards tend to be funky

which is why I have always added a SATA PCIe card and used those like Sonnet Tempo and others with 2 or 4 SATA ports. They don't have trouble, they mount and eject and go to sleep and easy to setup.
