Q: Is calendar data not stored in my iPhone?

I hadn't used iCloud much, to my knowledge, but when I bought an iPhone 5s, I was asked to backup the contents of my old 4s iPhone with iCloud. I did (took 15 hours) and then used iCloud to put the contents on my new iPhone. I got an Apple e-mail saying I would be over my complimentary iCloud storage if I didn't buy more or delete some content on iCloud. I deleted some things I thought I didn't need stored, including my calendar, which I assumed would still be on my iPhone. It wasn't. I thought iCloud was for backup; why wouldn't my calendar data remain on my iPhone?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7

icloud can perform backups from an iOS device to itself, but for the "Apple data" (emails, contact, calendars, etc.) it's really a syncing service, not a backup.  When a bunch of devices are connected to icloud, then icloud keeps them all in sync.  If you add or delete data from one of them, then the action is performed on all of them.
