Try a Restart.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Resetting your settings

You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.

Resetting your device

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.

Or if this doesn't work and nobody else on the blog doesn't have a better idea you can contact Apple.

Here is a link to their contacts with most of the information below.

I have the same problem as stated by Nickeyjay. And no, the recommendations by Gus2259 don't fix the problem either. I have tried everything you can possibly imagine. I went to two different Genius Bars in my area. Nothing they could do. They referred me to Apple Care (phone call). Apple Care opened a support ticket for me because they said that they need to have an engineer look into this problem, but no reply yet. Very disappointed at this point. I use my ipad 2 cameras a lot for Skype and FaceTime calls which I apparently can't do anymore due to this issue.

Try to reset the device:

*Device reset*

Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)

1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.

2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

This is my problem too and it's starting to tick me off.

One of the reasons why we have the iPad is for Facetime. My 2 year old loves Facetime with his grandparents and now he can't because the front camera stopped working after I upgraded to ios 7. I have an iPad 4 but this is strictly for work use only. Parents with a 2 year old would understand why.

I went to the Genius Bar and was advised that I have to shell out £199 for a replacement iPad 2. £199 because I upgraded to the much-touted ios 7!! They said that when there are hardware problems, it pops out when you upgrade to a new os. How on Earth can I know if there was a hardware problem to begin with? It was working just fine and dandy just before the upgrade. Now they tell me either I pay up or I'm stuck with a non-working camera. I know this is an old unit but it never had any issues before. I don't think it is fair to us that we paid a premium price for a device that does not get any support when problems arise from a new os.

What are you going to do about this, Apple???

Interesting, so there is a chance my iPad 4 may have been faulty since I got it ten months ago..

I never knew until this happened to me, and now reading other accounts that an update can screw a device up. I was going to get a 5S but now I have reservations given how easy it is for an Apple device to 'develop a fault'... With a little help from update.

I tried to reset my IPAD several times and as I previously wrote, the camera became functional; but when I shut down the device, the camera showed the black screen. After trying the reset process several times, I got the camera to to work again. But this time, even after shutting down several times, the camera function remained operational. If at first you don't succeed......Good luck to all having this problem.

Interesting, just to clarify did you get the camera to eventualy work after holding down the home button and power buttong so the Apple logo appears? - this is what you mean by reset?

I have tried about half a dozen times so far, happy to keep trying though!

I am still waiting to hear back from the store I purchased the iPad from, it's only 10 months old. Apple store is an 80 mile round trip for me.
