I have a new iPhone 5c. I get lots of emails so the notification thing is going off a lot. I can figure out how to turn off email notifications completely but what I would really like to do is to make it so that when I get email from a few specific contacts I get a notiication but otherwise not. Can that be done?

That's not a supported feature, unfortunately.
You can designate important contacts as VIP and assign a (single) different alert to VIPs. Tap on the sender's name in an email. Tap Add to VIP. Change the alert in Settings>Notifications>Mail.

Trying desperately to cut down on the amount of time I spend checking email, texts, and tweets. Notifications are useless unless filtered somehwo. This should help. I wish I could assign an entire email domain to VIP. I'd simply enter in my top ten clients.
