iPhone 4 not found after updating iOS, remains wanting to plug in to iTunes

What do I do next? I've tried to plug my phone into my Mac and it wants to download. After 11 minutes it says "The iPhone could not be restored. The device cannot be found" More information gets ne nowhere but here. Shutting down and turning on the phone only shows a USB plug wanting iTunes. No response to anything else.
