Update errors

A School Secretary's computer with Mountain Lion shows updates available when you go into in individual applications but when you go to the App Store and click on Updates, it says No Updates Available. I have tried changing the account she is signed in under but get the message;

An error has occurred unsupported URL

Any help much appreciated

App Store only shows updates for Apps which is been downloaded from App Store (iphoto, imovie, pages, numbers, evernote, twitter etc) and also security updates and system updates. Any apps which are NOT coming from the app store and are coming from different source (like Firefox, google chrome, microsoft Office, VLC, paralles, vmware) they have it own way for indicating that there is an update available and this won't be annouced in app store. Hope this will help.

There is one third party application but the others are Numbers, Pages, iTunes, Mountain Lion, AirPort Utility. If you go to Purhases, in the App Store, it lists these updates with the Install button available on the right hand side, but when you click on the Install button, it comes up with 'We could not complete your purchase. Numbers (or whatever you click on) is installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple Meno to check for Available Updates'. But as said, when you click on Updates, it states there are no updates available.
I looked in Preferences for an App Store plist thinking there was something there that was screwed and I could delete but couldn't find something obvious. It still seems like the list OS X keeps of updates is screwed and needs resetting / deleting but where is this?

I understand about going to the downloads page - use this to download updates to put on school computers but the only way (that I know of) that you can get iPhoto and iMovie updates now is to go through the App Store and she will still have a long term problem.

Thanks for your help.

School Networks usually are restricted (enabled firewall with strict rules) and this might cause the problem. when you are trying to download it firewall might not allow mac to connect to apple servers.

Maybe try first ot create additional administrator account (call it test or something similar) on this mac (it only will be a temporary solution, after all is done you an remove this account) and try to run software update when logged in to that new account. See if the same problem appears.

You can also try to boot to safe mode and try to update from it (if there is any additional 3rd party security apps like antyvirus or firewall, they will be disabled in safe mode).

Try if possible to use different network.

Great thoughts.

Already tried creating another account - should have said that. Same result

The school has no internal firewall - our internet is managed from an external source and if this was the problem then I would have thought other users would have the same trouble and I have updated another two teacher's laptops this morning.

She has also tried at home on her own network

Only thing I hadn't tried was Safe Mode but same response.

I like your problem solving skills. Thanks for your efforts. Still feel the problem is in the record OS X keeps of the upgrades or the way it reports what is loaded to Software Updates.

To iWoo, sorry should have stated in the original post, the updates are Apple updates, not third party ones. Thanks for your response though.

Your system is configured to download updates from a private server, not from Apple. That server isn't working or isn't reachable. If you're bound to a network directory server, or if you're behind a firewall that doesn't allow downloading updates directly from Apple, your network administrator has to solve the problem. Otherwise, proceed as follows.

Back up all data.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder…

from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.

A Finder window will open with a file selected. Delete the selected file. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Try Software Update again.

Nope, not connected to the server for updates and not bound to a directory.

BUT you've got me sorted. For some stupid reason I was looking at an App Store plist instead of a Software Update plist and had told the Secretary I reckoned it was just a plist that was causing the issue.

Found it, dealt to it, and now all working

Thanks very much! She will be so happy!
