Sony Camcorder / Adobe Premiere / Firewire - Thunderbolt adaptor

I have a Sony HVR-V1U that I used to shoot some video. I'm trying to transfer the video from the miniDV tapes to Adobe Premiere on a 2012 iMac, using a i.Link / Firewire 400 - Thunderbolt adaptor. i am not getting video to work in either Premiere or iMovie. Is there anyway to use this camera to transfer video through thunderbolt, or am I at a loss with the incapabilities of thunderbolt to work with firewire from older devices?

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Here's what I know from personal experience.

Some Sony's are very poor at connecting through their iLink port. I have a Sony PD100AP that is almost impossible to connect , the RCA and S video outputs work. I had use of a couple of brand new HVR Z1P's at uni and they too had poor Ilink ports.

I have a multitude of iLink cables of different brands and none connect the camera to computer.

I had sceptically read that the protruding metal connection of some cables are longer than others. Upon measuring and checking I found my original Sony cable is 0.27mm's longer than all others. This cable did offer intermittent connection in a PC I used to have. I have a Belkin 4 to 9 pin cable on order which some forum posts (other sites) have reported better results.

I have purchased a Apple thunderbolt to 9 pin firewire which is reputedly the best available.

Sorry I am not able to offer a solution immediately but you are not alone.

If the Belkin cable does not solve the connection problem I am going to purchase a (second hand) Sony deck. These are not cheap but I have heard very few complaints.

I have a Sony DCR-TVR350 DV camcorder and have faced something similar.

You can get a Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter which is $29.99 at Apple and Best Buy.

You will need a 4 pin to 9pin cable, which the other person had, a Belkin, and it worked. I purchased said cable at Radio Shack.. the 4pin to 9pin, Gigaware brand name and BAM! There was my camera. On the back of my package it also has RoHs compliant on it. Not sure if that is important, but all the trouble and money I have dumped and the one thing I didn't do, check the cable and then try another brand cable. Most of the time, in my experience, with older tape camcorders, it is the cables that make or break you. Hope that helps.
