My MacBook A1342 can't install the Mac OS X installation DVD version 10.6.1.

Hi guys!

So I just bought a MacBook A1342 from a hock shop and am trying to restore to factory settings as even though I did have to set up my account there are dome other computers linked under 'shared' etc,

So when I put the Mac OS X Install DVD version 10.6.1 in, it reads the DVD and I can instal the additional Installs but when I click on the Install Mac OS X.app

It says Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer.

It says in the information about this computer that the System Version is Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

When I restart the computer with the disc in it just does that thinking swirl on a white screen for ages then says I have to restart by holding down the power button.

Any suggestions on how to restore it or advice on what I should do.

You can't install an earlier OS on top of a newer OS. You have to erase the drive first. Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.

When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window.

Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. You should see your hard drive in the left hand column along with your other drives. Click on the drive and select the Erase tab. Set the format value to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and click the Erase button. After that has finished select the Partition tab. Type in a Name for your hard drive and select how many partitions you want from the Volume Scheme. The usual setting is one partition. Click on the Options button after you've selected a partition to make sure it's set for GUID. Then click the Apply button and after the Partitioning is done quit Disk Utility.

You can now follow the instructions on the install screen.

That said you must have a retail 10.6.1 DVD like this

And not gray disks like these. Those disks are machine specific and will only work with model that they shipped with,
