Mac email address/account without iCloud?

Is it possible to keep my Mac email address without buying extra iCloud space? Only email seems to use more than the free space. If I turn email off in the iCloud settings of my iPad (to reduce the space i use), my mac mail account is no longer visible under my accounts (my other not Mac email accounts are though). And how does this work with my Mac?
