Does the fingerprint scanner keep my fingerprint in a database?

I'm considering getting my first iPhone but I don't know if I want my fingerprint to be put into a database. Does it get put into an internal database for my phone only? Or does it get put in a one which could be accessed by hackers or 3rd party companies upon request?
