Q: Extrreme in bridge does not see Express

Have an Extreme behind a Uverse residential gateway.  Set in bridge mode and it provides intermet access via CAT5 to my PC and WiFi to my iPad and wife's MacBook Air.  Want to extend the network with an Airport Express. Reset the Express.  Connected the Express to the Extreme; Cat5 from a LAN port <--> on the Extreme to the only port on the Express (also a LAN).  The light slowly blinks amber and the Express does not appear when I start AirPort.  Have reset the Extreme and redone the network, disabling guest network.  Am at a loss.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Since you have connected the Express to the Extreme by Ethernet you have the basis for a roaming network. Please give the link to get a basic understanding of how this type of network is configured. If you still have any questions or need assistance with your setup, please post back.

Thanks for the reply.  There are two problems.

    1.  I do not see a WAN port on the AirPort Express.  All I have is a LAN port and a USB port.

    2.  When I start the AirPort utility, it does not see the AirPort Express.

Think if I could see the Express I could get it configured.

    1.  I do not see a WAN port on the AirPort Express.  All I have is a LAN port and a USB port.

The Ethernet connection would go from one of the available LAN ports on the Extreme to the Ethernet port on the Express. (Note: Since the Express will need to be reconfigured as a bridge for the roaming network, its Ethernet port is neither a WAN or LAN port, but just an Ethernet port.)

By default an AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a network name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. You have to connect your Mac to this network BEFORE attempting to access it with the AirPort Utility.

As I mentioned in my original post, I am using a PC, not a MAC.

Are you saying I have to establish a wireless connection before I can access AirPort utility?  I can se and configure the Extreme when connected with CAT 5.  But when I connect the Express to the Extreme I do not see it in AirPost Utility.

Sorry about that! Regardless, whether using a PC or a Mac, the computer needs to be connected to the AirPort's network before it can access it with the AirPort Utility. This can be via either a wireless or wired connection.

There are a number of ways to get access as well. In your example of having the Express connected to the Extreme by Eternet, the AirPort Utility should have found it as well.

If you do use your wife's MacBook Air can it find tbe Express? If so, then it may be your Win7 firewall that may be preventing the AirPort Utility from finding it.

Thank you again.  Realized I was beating my head against the wall for no good reason.  Before we got Uverse I was using the Extreme as a router and WAP, and because of the distance to the den, used the Express to extend the network.  While, with your help, I think I would have been able to duplicate that set-up behind the Uverse residential gateway, I really did not need to since the RG was handling the router functions.  So I configured the Extreme and put it where the Express was and have strong WiFi in hte den (realize Uverse provides WiFi, but again, would have needed to extend it to get a greast signal in hte den and had the Extreme...)
