I do not know about whatsapp, but blocking in the Phone app will also block that contact from messages - basically anything coming in from that contact's information for either the telephone or messages will be blocked.

Adding a contact to blocked adds the contact to a single blacklist, and it seems both the telephone feature and messages use that same blacklist.

Thanks Michael! I think I'm gonna try it out with a friend to see if apps such as whatsapp is also blocked cuz technically whatsapp is using the contact info in your phone.

Post back if it does please, so others can know too.

The issue will be wether 3rd party apps are given access to the blacklist used for blocking.  The phone app and messaging are iOS bundled apps, so they have authority to play nice with other parts of iOS which many 3rd party apps cannot do (because of iOS's sandboxed file system design).

But, if blocked IDs are just part of the Contacts app and its database, then anything that shares access to Contacts may also be able to make use of blocked ID's.  So your experiment will be informative to see what happens.

You could always try contacting the WhatsApp developers and ask them for clarification of whether it might be a future updated feature in WhatsApp, or no, it actually is not possible for a 3rd party app to even do.

I honestly do not know if it can or cannot even be done by a 3rd party app, but an iOS App developer would know.

P.S. have you had an update to WhatsApp specifically for iOS 7 yet?

Ahh - seems WhatsApp has its own blacklisting/blocking function, see

Could be since they already have it, they are not going to code it to use the iOS blocking feature?  But they also have not updated the app it looks like, since iOS 7 went public?

Hi, no there has been no update thus far. Yea their blocking feature is only effective when the number is not saved into the phone as a contact and then it gives you an option to block. But that would be an issue on the blocking on the ios7 side of things i think.
