Why is my MacBook Pro fan SO LOUD

oh good then, mine makes sooo much noise because I'm a YouTuber and I obviously use iMovie and my fans sound like a jet taking of and It gets soo annoying because I have to stop what I'm doing and wait for them so calm the heck down

I got excited that this might work...

but then I went to Library/Preferences in Terminal.

when I did and 'ls' I didn't see the .plist you mention

think it might be anywhere else? I'm running 10.9.5 on a macbook pro

I was having this same problem too on 2 separate 15" Macbook Pros. The original laptop has the onboard graphics, and had loud fans for about a year. The second laptop has the 2GB nvidia graphics, and it started having the problem the day I bought it.

Resetting the SMC worked for me on both laptops. See Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support for instructions. This was all I did:

1) Shut down computer

2) Held shift, control, option, and the power button all at once for about 5 seconds

3) Turned the computer on normally, and the problem went away

Again -- this worked on both of my 15" Macbook Pros.

Maybe you got insects crawl inside the vent when you weren't looking, I 've seen a few bugs crawl into my MacBook Pro and cleaning the inside of it seemed to work.

Exactly what I needed. The Energy Impact column showed a "Runawy application" (OneNote) that was using WAY more energy than it needed. Closed OneNote and the fan immediately quieted down.

i had the same problem with MBP but thanks god i solved it
i opened the activity monitor and i found a folder that was using 300% of cpu . i tried to force quit the folder but it was restarting immediately , the folder name is com.hp , you can find it in /library/printers , just drag the hp folder into your trash (do not empty trash ) then restart your MBP . the fan noise should stop by then . after that you go to your trash and put back the hp folder.

This helped me so much. My problem was not the iCloud but a printer. I checked utilities and it was running my CPU at a very high level (%). When I shut that printer down in my settings the fan slowed back down to it's original state. The fan noise is now gone. Thanks for sharing. I hope other people find this and use it as well.

question #1 is: are the CPUs being taxed whe it is loud?

Check using your activity monitor. If so, you then need to fidn out "by what?".

You have not indicated if the machine is brand new, you updated, changed something, etc. Tell us useful facts so we can help.

A very simple solution worked for me...it used to run loudly when I set it on my desk, so I figured the base of the MacBook is too flush to the table (a design issue I guess) to let the air from the fan out of it's body. So I "levitated" the laptop a little, and now the fan has a clear and open exhaust so it doesn't have to work as hard to keep the insides of the MacBook cool. It still runs every now and then, but then shuts off after cooling it down (and is not a loud also).

My Mac was doing the same thing I ordered a new fan on eBay you only remove three little screws it works beautifully very quiet it's all you have to do .

I have the same problem. When I first turn on my mac book air its fan soound is really lound then after time it gets harder to hear then i can not hear it barley anymore. Why does it do this as soon as i turn my mac on and then it slowly reduces the fan loudness.
