connection to outgoing server smtp.gmail.com fails on iphone5s/iOS7.0.1

I looked over at various Apple Support discussions as well as Google product forums and Gmail discussions. No one seems to have any clue as to this problem. I cannot send Gmails via by the default Mail app in iOS7. Whenever I try to send an email, I receive an error message saying "Cannot Send Gmail. Connection to outgoing server smtp.gmail.com failed", and it offers me options to go into mail settings and configure other smtp servers.

Here are a few relevant details.

  1. The exact same settings (username/password/SSL/Port 465) has worked on my iPhone since 3GS and whatever iOS was around at that time.
  2. Before anyone else asks the obvious questions, I have tried this while connected to the Wi-fi network both at home and at work, with same results. I can send Gmails using the Gmail app (made by Google) just fine. Every other web-enabled actions work. Heck, even saving the message to Draft works fine - because I can access those draft messages over the web on my iPhone or on my computer. It's just the sending that fails.
  3. I have deleted and re-added the Gmail account, to no avail. It is receiving emails just fine, but won't send.
  4. I have also shut down and restarted my phone to see if that works, but it didn't.
  5. In my phone, the Outgoing Mail Server is set as Gmail SMTP server. However, if I look into the details, I find that while the Server is on, all options including User Name etc. are greyed out, including the Done button.

The Primary SMTP server options cannot be changed, it seems. In the previous screen, there is an option to choose alternative smtp servers, the first option being smtp.gmail.com. I tried setting it up with my Gmail username and password, SSL and a port setting of 587. Mail is supposed to use that server if the primary one doesn't work, but that didn't work either.

Can some kind soul, particularly some kind soul from Apple, help?

So, I went back in and set one of my Gmail accounts up with the typical add "Google" email through Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Add Account. Set another up through the process outline previously.

It looks like the Gmail account setup with the add "Google" email account will send and receive when the phone is on a 3G network (Cellular), but will only receive (not send - getting same error message as you ) when on a WiFi network. Curious if when your account started to work? Was it on Cellular network or WiFi? Only curious because it could it be a setting my office has for the WiFi here or is it consistent with every account.

Appreciate your time.

Cheers.

This seems to have worked for me.

Go to your iPhone Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Add Account>Other>Add Mail Account.

Type in your name, your usual Gmail email address, your password and description ( if needed ).

Next

Incoming Mail Server:

Host Name: imap.gmail.com

User name: (your gmail email address)

Password: (your gmail password)

Outgoing Mail Server:

Host name: smtp.gmail.com

User name (your gmail email address - must be done - not optional)

Password: (your gmail password - must be done - not optional)

I was able to send out emails after this. looks like the "simple" way to add a Gmail account is not working properly - had to fully enter incoming / outgoing servers.

Cheers.

p.s. Did find that I can only sync Mail & Notes. Was not given the option for Calendars & Contacts.

Thank you for your response. Just to clarify, I never had problems receiving emails via Gmail through the Mail app on my iPhone. It was the sending that was the issue. As I mentioned towards the end of my message, in the screen previous to the second image, there was an option to choose another SMTP server, which I set up as - as you suggested, too - smtp.gmail.com giving my username and password. But this did not solve my problem.

For some reason, unbeknownst to me, I have now regained the ability to send emails using my Gmail account through the iPhone Mail app. I have, of course, zero clue why the problem occurred and how it got resolved, so that the next time it happens, I shall be back at the same spot. But for now, it works.

That greyed out option for the SMTP remains a mystery though. I was hoping that someone from Apple would actually deign to answer this question, but I guess I was expecting too much. 😝

I had the exact same problems as you. Could receive, but not send through the native iOS7 Mail app.

I wasn't clear enough, sorry about that; I had to completely remove the Gmail account, re-enter all the information as the above response ( using the "Other" option for email setup ) and set the account up all over again.

Happy to hear the Gmail account has started to work again. Want to see now if mine will do the same... have many Contacts / Calendars I would like to have access to again.

Cheers.

To be honest with you, I did not try sending the gmail via the Mail app over a cellular network this time. With my earlier iPhones, 3GS and 4 (respectively with AT&T 3G and - ahem! - "4G" network), I absolutely could send (as well as receive emails into my Gmail account through the Mail app. The iPhone 5s works on 4G/LTE, but it didn't occur to me to try sending the gmail on the cellular network. 😊 *embarrassed*

The sending problem I had occurred over Wi-fi, both at home (WPA2 Personal) and at work (WPA2 Enterprise) networks. Needless to say, now the sending is working everywhere - Wi-fi and cellular. Go figure!!

My first thought, like yours, was about the Wi-fi setting at work (port blockage etc.), but then I realized that I haven't ever changed those settings from phone to phone, network to network. Sigh!

I updatedd my iPhone 4S and my iPad 2 to iOS7 last week and I have the same problem as described above.

Needless to say, that everything worked fine until the update.

The default GMail SMTP Server, that is listed as the primary server, was never created by me.

It simply was there after the update.

There is no login name available for this primary server and all fields are greyed out as described.

The Primary server cannot be deleted, nor can any of the other gmail smtp servers that have been there before. One for each googlemail account I have listed (2 for me, 2 for my kids - 3 googlemail.com 1 gmail.com).

I do not have an iCloud email account, only a regular iCloud login.

I read something about deleting all google accounts and synching the working accounts from my Mac using iTunes, so I tried that. After snchronizing my iPhone, I could still not send email with any of my googlmail account.

I noticed, that the moment I synchronized the gmail accounts, all smtp servers were again listed the same way as before.

So I gave up. Annoyed I shut down my iPhone.

Now, two days later, I looked at the smtp list again, an to my surprise, another smtp server (one I had once created) was now listed as my primary server for 1 of my googlemail accounts! /The gmail account still has the 'invented' Gmail SMPT server listed.

Complete with full name and password... when the hack did that happen?

But even with this data, I cannot send any emails or at least it looked that way. After about 10 minutes, I suddenly received the email I send to my exchange account. That happened during my manual setup of the other gmail account. Since that, no more emails were send. I can hardly create a new account everytime I want to send an email???

Same thing with my manually created gmail account (following the instructions above). No entry in an outbox, no email in the receiving inboxes. some 20 minutes later, one of my test email came through. For whatever reason.... Think there is still some problem left to solve.

I just use WLAN for data transfer.

I have the same problem. I deleted all Gmail accounts and started over and seemed to have solved the problem, but then it came back. Hadn't noticed the 3G vs Wifi trick and that just solved the problem of the 2 mails stuck in my Outbox. I am on my home network at the moment, not an office one, so this must be a general wifi problem as I have not touched my Wifi settings for years. This is strange and annoying, although I may try the "other" setup above just to see if that changes anything

I had a similar issue. I was at a hotel on the wifi and my phone suddenly could not send e-mail. I am using an iphone5 with ios8. Based off the comments, I tried sending an email using my blackberry's hotspot and it worked. I think it has something to do with the type of wifi system. I am in France in a small hotel so it could be something based off that. Moreover when I used the gmail app all was fine too.

Very frustrated, was dealing with the same exact issue. Thank you for the original and very thorough post. Tried everything I found and to confirm—the only thing that worked—mail will send on cellular network. Once I turned off my wi-fi, Mail app in iOS7 sent out my gmail. So annoying. Apple, meet google...google, meet Apple. We'd all appreciate it if you guys got along better.

I have the same thing happened to me, I tried to reset my password for Gmail through the mail app and even though I put in my login ID and password correctly, I keep getting a message back that it was wrong.

I subsequently got notification from Google saying they had blocked and login attempt from a "less secure app"

I was given a link to turn on access to less secure apps, which I did, and now my mail app is sending mails again from Gmail

for the iphoneSE using 10.3.3, go to 'accounts', 'mail', 'accounts', 'icloud', scroll down to 'advanced', tap 'mail', under 'outgoing mail server' tap 'SMTP', under 'other SMTP servers' tap 'smtp.gmail.com' to turn it on. If 'smtp.gmail.com' isn't there, tap 'add server' and add it (making sure you put in your user name (xxxx@gmail.com) and password (they're NOT optional!)

connection to outgoing server smtp.gmail.com fails on iphone5s/iOS7.0.1
