Q: ios7 keeps refreshing apps after switching

I dont know if this is a new "feature", but it's really annoying.

If i have, say, an open webpage in Safari, and say i've scrolled down the page and zoomed in to a section i'm interested in, then switch to Mail to get some info, and then switch back to the webpage, the webpage will refresh and take me back to the top.

It's REALLY annoying.

Why can't it just stay where it was, like in ios6??

Is anyone else having this issue? Can anyone think of a fix?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

Another voice affected, and it's seriously affected the usability of my iPad mini (2012) to me as well.

The memory analysis matches my own hypothesis, and disabling Background App Refresh could indeed help (I've just turned it off entirely to see if I notice an improvement): fundamentally, BAR must use more memory as it either allows ana pp to be resident or check for updates or act on received notifications. Whether or not it's a significant amount of memory is the question, though.

This, and the increased lag/responsiveness of the onscreen keyboard, are my two biggest annoyances with iOS 7. Does anybody know of an appropriate thread for the keyboard? It seems far less accurate for me to type at speed, with shifts and spaces both being misread more frequently than they were in iOS 6 (for me).

I've been unable to get a follow up response from Apple tech support after playing the game of restoring the device with no success. Clearly Apple does not want to acknowledge this problem. At this point I don't think there is anything we can do about this problem.  I can say that this is my first and last Apple product. How so many users can sit back and blindly accept this problem is beyond me.

    HI,

THE 7.1 BETA DO NOT FIX THE MULTITASKING PROBLEM.. IT FIX THE SAFARI PAGE RELOAD PROBLEM BUT NOT THE APP SWITCH (MULTI-TASKING) PROBLEM.

AND THE RELEASE IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR TEH END OF MARCH 2014 THIS MEAN 7 MONTHS AFTER THE RELEASE OF THE IOS7 ... ITS A SHAME !!!!! WHY DON'T THEY DO A 7.0.X FIX FOR SAFARI NOW AND THEN A NEW ONE FOR THE SEVERAL FIX IOS7 NEEDS...

    SHAME .. SHAME...

Then they should let the tech support folks know because as of yet they won't even acknowledge the problem.  Why doesn't someone from Apple come to this forum and alert the real world users that a solution is on its way?

Too many folks are simply blind to any problems their Apple products might have. They have grown to accept any problem as a feature. Well, I'm not blind. I can see past the logo. This problem is not being acknowledged by Apple corporate because it is working exactly as they planned. You may not completely understand the problem as comments from other posters would imply. This "feature" causes millions of devices to unnecessarily reload millions of gigabytes of data daily. This results in an extremely exaggerated metric of Apple product data usage and results in millions of users exceeding their plan limits. This has the effect of injecting billions of dollars into the phone service providers pockets and then also Apples pocket. Don't you see it? How are you not enraged? How can you comment so nonchalantly as to expect the world to take your word that a solution is on its way when perhaps the largest smartphone provider has figured out a way to steal from all of us legally while all the while ignoring a bug that causes this windfall?

    Wake up!

Apple will never recognize those bugs and specially the app switching one.. if they do that officially all the magazines, blogs, and smartphones tester will spread the news all over the web and apple will loose thousand or maybe millions of future new buyers.

They prefer to loose actual users like you and me be cause this will be a lot less than new users and people like you and me just can write on their forum but its not enough to get into magazines and blogs... this issue will stay here in the forum that's all man!.

Wait for the fix if there is one... but sincerly i dont believe in a fix for the 7.1.. for sure on the 7.1 beta 1 there is no fix at all.

So when i dont know and now 4 months later still no fix.. i can't wait no more i am very very VERY happy with my new sony xperia z1.

And all synced with google.. calendar, adressbook .. all works perfectly.

Now that i am writing about google i remember another thing about Apple.. when they first release their email addresses with the @mac.com .. i remember being so happy having my email @mac.com and then several months after they stopped the @mac.com and started the @me.com... woo this was very annoying to contact everyone to inform them about my mail changing from @mac to @me .. and then again .. several months later they stopped the @me.com for @icloud.com .... woooo this was the END!... i have closed everything and switched all to google.

Google, synced to my sony xperia z1 and i like the idea of having an email for life and having a phone using android which in case of problem or if i want to switch i have more than hundreds of brand and models to choose without having to change everything, just sync and work.

No need of jailbreak .. very easy to add some new albums... not the need to use itunes which was turning me mad when adding a single album to my iphone.

Think about it... but for my part i am all convinced.

    Phil

guys i dont know if im just imagining stuff, but turning on reduce motion option seems to fix this somehow ? unless im completely ******** somehow.

anyways i bought the ipad mini last week, i was debating if i should get the retina or orginial, and decided to go with the original since it was on sale. i figured ill live with it for a year and ugrade to next years model while saving upwards of 160$ vs getting the retina one now.

i noticed this problem from the first day i turned on my ipad.

reading some articles, i stumbled upon a page where it said turning on reduce motion helps speed up older gen phones/tablets (less memory used) so i went ahead and tried that, only to discover i miss the visual affects of transitions and what not.

anyways, after finding this thread i said to myself let me try multitasking with reduce motion on. so i did, i opened upwards of 10 apps (gmail, youtube, notes, nike, email, hangouts, and couple more) and upon switching between them NON OF THEM REFRESHED. i was shocked, i tried it with a different set of apps and again it didnt not refresh. before doing this my gmail used to refresh as soon as i left the app and came back to it.

AGAIN i dont know if this is a fix, or just temporary or even if i just got lucky couple of times.. but i recommend whoever reads this to try it out or let us know if the problem is occuring with reduced motion on.

I'm trying reduce motion setting now and we'll see. I already like how the screen behaves and transitions. Guess I'm old fashioned. For those who had to hunt like me:

Settings > General > Accessibility, then find Reduce Motion and turn it On.

For all those angry enough to cry loudly about how you're leaving Apple, etc. That is your choice, of course, and that's what free economics is all about. I'm sticking with Apple for the time being. I use a Samsung tablet for my work (company issued). Compared to my iPad 2, it's a POS. Just my humble opinion, of course. Apps and Safari refreshing when I don't want it, and logging me out of secure web sites, is highly frustrating. But I'm willing to live with this for the time being as everything else about the product suits my needs very well, and I like the Apple products and support overall. Sure, I wish they'd recognize the problem publicly, but I'm pretty sure it's not some secret Cupertino conspiracy with mobile phone companies to increase your data use, or increase some metric that shows lots of Apple users. Senior level management already knows the real numbers, and they sure don't need some weird bogus numbers to sell their products. They need (and I contend want) their products to sell themselves as quality high end products.

If a Sony android is everything you want and need, go for it! In the mean time, I'd like to see more discussion (as in the Reduce Motion business above) rather than Apple bashing. You should buy and own the product that best fits your needs and desires, and share with others when there are problems. That way we might be able to help ourselves when Cupertino is slower than we'd like to acknowledge and fix a problem.

BTW, my company is switching to iPads, canning the Samsung tablet, and probably going to an Android phone as well. Go figure....

I completely agree with your sentiments herkdriver. There is not much out there to really challenge the iPad and, to put things in perspective, for most of us this problem is an annoying niggle rather than the end of the world.

Re Giroyac's suggestion, I have had 'Reduce Motion' on since iOS 7 first came out as some of the animations seemed a little sluggish on my iPad 2. For me, it has made no difference to the background refresh problem.
