Aug 12, 2014 8:32 AM in response to sjmawerby Tombleboo,Phew! Three hours later and I've finally finished reading this forum. That's a chunk of my life I'll never get back...I feel like I know some of you people - can't wait for the movie to come out, who will play Chronicon Helveticum - back in the day I would have said that guy who played Lou Grant, but nowadays I'm thinking Morgan Freeman?
I've got an Ipad Air and just noticed the problem these past couple of days, and after hoking about here and veering off to some of the links I've managed to stop the behaviour at least on my bit of kit (and please forgive my lack of tech savvy / accurate terminology).
I play Scrabble and switch to Safari/Google/ScrabbleFinder web page for cheats. Just switching between these two things was a two minute wind-up of gargantuan proportions, the word typed in the search box on the web page would be gone when I went back to Scrabble then back to the web, and Scrabble would refresh and hang instead of just reappearing instantly on my game board, just so so time consuming and annoying. So I typed a search in Google and here I am.
Anyway, the bottom line is, by doing the thing below, this doesn't happen any more, the search words stay put and the Scrabble board is there straight away, no refresh etc.
I didn't know about the double click on the home button thing that in itself is a pyrotechnic revelation. There it all was, EVERYTHING that had occurred since I got this thing about a month ago - camera, Angry Birds, Skype, on and on and on. I know from reading here that this isn't necessarily a hard cached footprint of all activity, just a minuscule snapshot of apps (etc) used, but it is very interesting that after I flicked them all to the top to get rid of them, the machine started working in a fit for purpose way again, searches now stay put, multiple web page tabs remain the same and don't refresh and Scrabble goes straight to the game board without an initial refresh/reload.
I'm convinced this is a memory issue, 1gb RAM is not a lot and it's interesting my problem went away when I closed down all those apps. I know ideally we would be able to have multiple apps open at the same time all working freely and smoothly at least to Apple's suggested faux multi-tasking levels, but this is the real world and I don't think the Ipad is meant for that. Keep your cache clean, disable memory intensive settings and keep killing apps you're not using, and do a total(ish) kill every day then you'll have enough memory for the few apps you need or want to use in the moment.
For what it's worth, I think the solution about turning off auto brightness seems to make sense if you think there is a glitch but mine was never turned on and I got the problem all the same.

Aug 13, 2014 3:45 AM in response to Tomblebooby paulfromstone,I hope you have fixed the issue for yourself, but most reported "fixes" are only actually short-term alleviations for the person reporting them, and the issue returns soon enough.
I tried turning off auto brightness on my iPhone 4, but couldn't live with continually having to adjust the brightness manually, so it's back on. iOS 7.1 helped me a great deal (as I illegally reported on here during the betas), but the issue's still there randomly. My iPad 4's still on iOS6 - I refuse to update it after the debacle with my iPhone - but that does too suffer from the same issue occasionally, so it's not completely new to iOS7, just a lot worse.
I basically use my laptop a lot more again. I'm reluctant to buy any more Apple devices anyway, since they eventually render them unusable through updates (or the loss of features [Facetime] and security fixes if you shun them).

Aug 15, 2014 8:19 AM in response to sjmawerby scottinhawaii,Well add me to the chorus. I've been having this problem all along and was resigned to it. But yesterday I was composing something fairly long on my iPad, switched to check something and came back to a refresh that wiped out what I had written.
So sad to see there is no real solution.

Aug 22, 2014 9:36 PM in response to sjmawerby AXMattsMe,hate to be the bearer of bad news but im on iOS8 beta 5 on my iPad Air, my iPhone 4s, 5s and my iPad Mini and the issue still exists. I have reached out to some developer friends at apple. Will keep posted if they come back with any encouraging news.

Aug 29, 2014 10:18 PM in response to AXMattsMeby usmc8408,Allow me to throw my hat in the ring too. On both my iphone 5 and ipad mini 7.1.2 every darn time i switch apps and come back it refreshes, regardless of how many background apps are running, or how long i switch away. i constantly lose my place within apps, or heaven forbid i'm in the process of typing something. This reply for example would be lost. I think i went from 7.0.4 where I had no problem, to 7.1.2 when all this started. So I'm not sure what version started this dumb issue! Unless I'm missing something, I don't see any kind of a fix. Is there really no answer or resolution to this?

Sep 1, 2014 12:54 AM in response to sjmawerby Seven7749,This has been happening to me too since the upgrade of iOS7. Hopefully if enough customers threaten to leave Apple something will be done.

Sep 10, 2014 8:28 PM in response to Seven7749by jamessmke,so, anyone been hands on with the iphones 6 or 6+? any reason to think the more powerful phones will resolve this? do they really still only have 1GB of ram? is it true that 1GB of ram on an iphone is better than 1GB of ram on an android phone? i've been using a google nexus 5 since ios 7 screwed up my iphone 4S. would love to get back into iphone 6, but definitely won't if this problem isn't resolved.

Sep 11, 2014 1:38 AM in response to Seven7749by efwefw343434,no one will leave Apple and they know it!
Maybe IOS 8 will address somehow this issue. Let's wait next week.

Sep 11, 2014 12:12 PM in response to sjmawerby thegnat1,My husband has iPhone 4s with latest software and when he goes to Settings then cellular data and scrolls down, the Numbers app keeps turning itself on after he turns it off. It isn't updating. I would like to know why this is happening and how to stop it! Thank you!

Sep 19, 2014 9:59 AM in response to Chris CAby ghbyram,While this thread has become quite stale I do hope that any subscribed who do take the plunge will update this thread with their experiences with Iphone 6 on IOS8 relative to this issue.
Even if it "seems better" ... I know they are touting the greater device RAM and if they are applying a RAM band aid to bad architecture ... I'm done.
I'm eligible for an update with my carrier in November and am quite eager to get off my current 4/4s due to this issue.

Sep 19, 2014 3:22 PM in response to ghbyramby Seven7749,I Have an iPhone 6 plus on order due for delivery early October. As soon as it arrives I will test it and update this thread. I suggest those sitting on the fence about continuing with the iOS systems hold fire until then...

Sep 21, 2014 6:27 PM in response to efwefw343434by phofascinating,Whelp. Just updated to iOS 8 on my (second) iPad mini with this annoying bug. And absolutely no fixes. In fact the lag when opening iBooks that pops you to the Library before bringing you back to where you were in your book is even worse. I am so incredibly frustrated. Good luck all!
