Q: ios7 keeps refreshing apps after switching

I dont know if this is a new "feature", but it's really annoying.

If i have, say, an open webpage in Safari, and say i've scrolled down the page and zoomed in to a section i'm interested in, then switch to Mail to get some info, and then switch back to the webpage, the webpage will refresh and take me back to the top.

It's REALLY annoying.

Why can't it just stay where it was, like in ios6??

Is anyone else having this issue? Can anyone think of a fix?

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2

This issue was already fixed in iOS 7.1.x

But it seems to be back now on iOS 8.x.x

Seems to be a device independent bug, because also the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are affected.

If you read this entire thread you'll see that simply isn't the case for anyone. And, it certainly wasn't the case for me.

That's correct all devices have and continue to be affected since this issues was first noted in this thread about a year ago.

But i don't have any low memory log on my iPhone 6, therefore i doesn't seem to be a low memory related problem

I think if you read through this thread you'll find the overall conclusion is no one has been able to identify what the specific problem is related to. Although there have been some cases where Apple support has claimed that this is how iOS is supposed to work. Given that mindset I don't expect a "fix" for all of us who bought a phone that advertises multitasking, but in reality it doesn't work. Here's how Apple describes multitasking:

"When you're using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can switch quickly from one app to another. When you return to an app, you can pick up right where you left off." Src: Understand multitasking and background activity on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

This is a false statement as you can see from this forum thread.

I can only speak about my experience in the past.

Multitasking worked for me until iOS 6 (like Apple describes it in that link you posted). Since iOS 7.x.x this issue occurs for me, not before. After one iOS 7.1.x update this issue disappeared completely for me (also there were some informations about that in a release notes).

Suddenly on my new iPhone 6 and on iOS 8.x.x this issue is back.

Can anyone speak to the iPad Air 2? I don’t expect the bug to be fixed at this point, but has the doubled RAM at least helped with our issue?

I’ll probably receive some [justly deserved] criticism for rewarding Apple by upgrading, but I’d be willing to accept it if I could get effective multitasking back. However, if the issue has not improved, there’s no way I’ll be upgrading.

I was provided a new iPhone 6 through my work and it's like night and day compared to the abomination that was iOS 7+ on the 4s.  I haven't seen any significant signs of the refresh problem on the 6 yet (running 8.1).  This is very likely due to the extra RAM in the 6, although one of my earlier posts had shown that the refresh problem was fairly easy to replicate even on an iPad Air, which also had 1GB of RAM.  So I was skeptical when I got my 6 and expected to see some similar signs of refresh problems, although to date I have been pleasantly surprised and haven't noticed any significant problems.

I have been able to load multiple tabs in Safari and switch between them without them reloading.  Of course there is a point at which too many tabs result in too much content to hold in memory, at which point a tab will eventually refresh.

As for app refreshing, I have been able to load multiple apps, across multiple days, and switch between them without the apps refreshing.  I can load up a map in Google Maps, switch to my email, load multiple web pages, check Facebook, and come back to the map without it refreshing.  On the 4s, just switching between two apps would more often result in the app I returned to refreshing.

I have pushed this to the extreme with many apps, each loading lots of content. Eventually apps will refresh, but when they do the apps load extremely fast and the content reloads quickly.

Overall using the 6 is like a breath of fresh air.  This doesn't reduce my frustration over the introduction, and lack of resolution, of the problem on the 4s with iOS 7.  If my work hadn't covered the majority of the cost of this device I doubt I would have upgraded to another iOS device.  And I have no plans to update my 4s to iOS 8.1.  Its limited resale value will be higher if I leave it on 7 (and would have commanded a much higher premium had I left it on iOS 6).

I am concerned that they chose to stick with only 1 GB of RAM on the 6, however.  I'm not convinced that I won't be running into similar problems in a couple years when iOS 10 comes out with much higher RAM requirements.

The fact is that the iPhone 6 has also this issue. Maybe not that much like an iPhone 4S, but the issue is there and present.

The fact isn't that the iPhone 6 can load an app faster after losing the content, the fact is that an app is losing his content/status.

Means also that this dedicated app isn't able to send push notifications any longer until you start the app again, means background app refresh doesn't work proper (no red badges about new content and so on)

I use the iPhone 6 since the launch date and this issue is there multiple times a day.. it is really annoying.

Well, I've had enough. I thought that it's kind of normal for the 4s to experience app refreshing problems due to low memory. I considered getting the 5s now after the 6es are out, but as it turns out they seem to have the very same problems. I'm just happy to have done some reading - spares me a few hundred euros. Which I will now invest in a droid...

One thing that baffles me about this thread is that there has never been a response from Apple here. Is it their policy to not involve themselves in the discussions here? Or, is this simple a case of the problem being ignored or minimized?
