says:
- Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click the iCloud icon.
- Click the Manage button.
- Click Change Storage Plan.
- Click Downgrade Options.
- Enter your Apple ID password, then click Manage.
- Choose your current plan, then click Done.
If your current plan isn't the level you want to be, choose the one that is.

Clearly you did not read the issue presented by chill76, and also experienced by me. I have done all of the steps you have listed. However - the 'done' button is greyed out so I can not complete the process. Anyone else out there with an answer?

Sep 29, 2013 9:52 AM in response to aepayneby Roger Wilmut1,Yes, of course I read his post, but there was no indication whether he was trying to do this in the correct way as I listed above or using the normal upgrade process, which apparently doesn't work - or indeed whether he is trying to maintain his storage level or change it. The process I quote is the correct one but not everyone has been following it (it is hardly intuitive).
When you follow steps 1-5, do you see what is in the screenshot I posted, or something else? Does it give the expiry date as shown in the image? Are you trying to maintain the storage level you currently have for free?
The process shown above has worked for most people, so either there is something different about your situation which is affecting it (for example if you bought any additional storage in the last year) or there is a technical issue which only Support can sort out. It the latter, go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; select 'iTunes', and then 'iTunes Store'.

Sep 29, 2013 12:04 PM in response to Roger Wilmut1by chill76,I did do everything thing you suggested. I have not ever bought storage but I had 20, maybe 25gb and have been warned that it will be switched to 5gb after September. I need more than 5 but not 20gb. I was trying to downgrade but the "done" button is grey. It looks like as long as I have the number of gb's checked that it will do it automatically on the 30th or Oct. 1st. I just wanted to be sure and do it ahead of time.
Thanks!

Sep 29, 2013 12:43 PM in response to chill76by Roger Wilmut1,I would expect that you need to click the 'Done' button but I don't know why this isn't working. Try clicking the current level and seeing whether this ungreys the 'Done' button (don't click it) - if so try 10GB again.
If it still doesn't work, come out of it and try the normal procedure for buying 10GB from scratch - this will over-ride the free storage.
- From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
- Click the iCloud icon.
- Click Manage in the lower-right corner.
- Click Change Storage Plan (in the upper-right).
- Choose the amount of storage you want, then follow the instructions that appear.

Nov 2, 2013 2:14 PM in response to Roger Wilmut1by ricnik,Same thing is happening to me from my iPad AND my Mac.
I follow those exact steps on my Mac, and enter the password, and it just keeps bringing up the password screen again.
I'm sure my password is correct because after trying my normal password 10 times I typed FXXX You Apple in as my password and it said I was using the wrong password...
Seems like an intentional glitch to prevent people from downgrading.

Nov 2, 2013 2:53 PM in response to ricnikby Roger Wilmut1,You've posted in a thread specifically about the free extra storage that ex-MobileMe subscribers had, which expired on September 30th. This cannot apply to you now, so it's not clear exactly what you are trying to do.
Are you trying to downgrade or upgrade? And from what to what? If you have extra storage when did you buy it?

Sep 16, 2014 8:56 AM in response to chill76by jok5r,I know this is an old question, but the solution is as follows. (Mine was also greyed out today when I tried):
I had selected "200GB" accidentally, but actually only wanted "20GB". When I tried to downgrade and select "20GB", the "Done" was greyed out. I then clicked the "free" option and the "Done" was clickable. I selected "Free", clicked "done", and came out of the iCloud settings. Then I went back in, selected "20GB", and the "Done" button was clickable. I selected "Done" and came all the way out of the settings again, except my phone was still saying I had "196GB of 200GB" available. I called Apple support and they said that it would downgrade to the "20GB" option on the date indicated in the change storage options screen. They also confirmed that they could see the change to "20GB" on their system, so my method seems to have worked.
Hope this helps people.
