Help changing my iCloud storage before Sept. 30.

I have tried to change my plan to 10 gb of storage and it won't let me finish it! I can check that option and then I can't choose "done". How do I downgrade or change my storage amount and so that I do not lose anything? I've been trying for several days and on different devices.

Once again, I know this is an old question, but I had the same issue in 2017, and kept ending up in this discussion, so i thought I would put my five cents in as well. Here is how I solved it: I scheduled a call from support and they solved my problems. It seemed like they really wanted to make sure I don't lose information, so they explained that after 30 more days anything over 5GB would be erased (I didn't care to ask what would be erased first). So.. long story short, schedule a call (they will actually call you sharp at the scheduled time) and solve it for you.

Yes, of course I read his post, but there was no indication whether he was trying to do this in the correct way as I listed above or using the normal upgrade process, which apparently doesn't work - or indeed whether he is trying to maintain his storage level or change it. The process I quote is the correct one but not everyone has been following it (it is hardly intuitive).


When you follow steps 1-5, do you see what is in the screenshot I posted, or something else? Does it give the expiry date as shown in the image? Are you trying to maintain the storage level you currently have for free?


The process shown above has worked for most people, so either there is something different about your situation which is affecting it (for example if you bought any additional storage in the last year) or there is a technical issue which only Support can sort out. It the latter, go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; select 'iTunes', and then 'iTunes Store'.

I did do everything thing you suggested. I have not ever bought storage but I had 20, maybe 25gb and have been warned that it will be switched to 5gb after September. I need more than 5 but not 20gb. I was trying to downgrade but the "done" button is grey. It looks like as long as I have the number of gb's checked that it will do it automatically on the 30th or Oct. 1st. I just wanted to be sure and do it ahead of time.

I would expect that you need to click the 'Done' button but I don't know why this isn't working. Try clicking the current level and seeing whether this ungreys the 'Done' button (don't click it) - if so try 10GB again.


If it still doesn't work, come out of it and try the normal procedure for buying 10GB from scratch - this will over-ride the free storage.


  1. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  2. Click the iCloud icon.
  3. Click Manage in the lower-right corner.
  4. Click Change Storage Plan (in the upper-right).
  5. Choose the amount of storage you want, then follow the instructions that appear.

Same thing is happening to me from my iPad AND my Mac.


I follow those exact steps on my Mac, and enter the password, and it just keeps bringing up the password screen again.


I'm sure my password is correct because after trying my normal password 10 times I typed FXXX You Apple in as my password and it said I was using the wrong password...


Seems like an intentional glitch to prevent people from downgrading.

I know this is an old question, but the solution is as follows. (Mine was also greyed out today when I tried):


I had selected "200GB" accidentally, but actually only wanted "20GB". When I tried to downgrade and select "20GB", the "Done" was greyed out. I then clicked the "free" option and the "Done" was clickable. I selected "Free", clicked "done", and came out of the iCloud settings. Then I went back in, selected "20GB", and the "Done" button was clickable. I selected "Done" and came all the way out of the settings again, except my phone was still saying I had "196GB of 200GB" available. I called Apple support and they said that it would downgrade to the "20GB" option on the date indicated in the change storage options screen. They also confirmed that they could see the change to "20GB" on their system, so my method seems to have worked.
