Email using too much memory

My email usage is at 548mb although I've deleted most of the emails. When I receive and delete emails, it still adds to the total usage. I'm using an email account on a pop3server from my PC. What can I do to dump the memory and prevent this from happening again. Many thanks.

iPad, iOS 7

I had this same problem and spent a ton of time with online apple chat and many other sources, but I finally figured it out! Go to your settings, scroll down and click on "Mail". Delete all email accounts you have. Push the home button until you are on your home screen. Click on settings again, and then click on "iCloud" and scroll to the bottom and select "Sign Out". Push the home button until you are back on your home screen. Finally, delete the mail app, I mean the actual icon. You do this by holding your finger on the mail icon for a few seconds. When you remove your finger you will see an x in the left hand corner. Click this x. Your phone will ask you if you are sure you want to do this as it will delete all data stored on the app. Select "remove". Then restart your phone. When you turn your phone back on you will see your mail is no longer taking up any data. Now go to the app store and reinstall your mail app. Just type in "mail" and it will be the second option. Then you can click on this app icon and it will prompt you to log into your email accounts. You can choose to sign in to your iCloud this way, or from the settings menu. If you would like to sign into iCloud from settings simply clock on "iCloud" again. You will be prompted to sign in to your iCloud account and set your settings. If you need to add more than one email account, go to settings and click on "mail". Then click on "accounts". Next click on "add account" and proceed from there.

It seriously took me months to figure this out, so I really hope this helps somebody!!

548MB for email is a huge chunk of storage. Some novels take up less space.

I don't know what ISP you use or email client, but there's a really good chance that a fair part of your email is advertising and pics. Opt out of adverts that you don't want; a simple opt-out get rid of most. Remove pics you still want to an external storage solution.

The best solution is to weed out the excess email as if you were weeding a garden. I'm probably not typical, but I always empty my email trash after every session.

The good news is that you don't have to turn features off, though full use of the iPad's features usually means starting off with a 4g iPad or 1g iPad Mini.

I don't believe you need a full restore. Toss unneeded email into the trash, or find inventive ways of managing your mail, like reserving a mailbox for priority messages, and using another mailbox for disposable messages..

I think I'm having the same issue as Phawlty.

My iPad 2 running iOS 7 says Mail uses 2.7 GB of storage, but when I browse through all of my mailaccounts and their subfolders (including trash etc.) on the iPad, all I find is around 15 emails, none of which have large attachments.

I do get emails with large attachments, but usually I delete them without ever having opened them on the iPad. So my guess is that there's a bug somewhere in iOS which does not free the memory of emails which were deleted.

I reset my iPad to factory settings, since I kinda needed those 2.7GB of memory. Now Mail uses 13MB, and I have the same emails on my device as before the reset. I'll keep an eye on Mail, to see if it starts hogging memory again...

P.S: Exactly the same applies to my iPhone 5 running iOS 7, however it's "only" using 0.6GB atm...

Apple Mail is calculated dynamically by the software. If, as a prior user discovered, you see that you have 500MB of Mail, deleting or storing the Mail is you best option.

If, however, your Mail is around 50MB, there's no concern. The size will change for every user.

Now, Endoo, you mention that your email space continues to grow. Perhaps you could answer a few questions to pinpoint the issue.

1. What is the size of the email space? How much has it grown, and over what period of time?

2. How are you measuring the space?

3. Is Mail causing problems? Does it work properly? Specify the issues.

4. There seems to be an urgency to your question - "...need a solution fast." Is there a problem with your machine/Mail?

You can respond in this thread.

First thanks for the fast reply.

I check the email usage in ->general->usage

As for now its 681mb. Easier today it was 678 and then I deleted about 30 mails from one acounts sent box and then deleted the same ones from trash. After that it had grown from 678-680.

About afew weeks ago when i first noticed the big usage it was just over 500.

I often send emails with videos and it seem as for every mail sent and replied it grow fast.

I have about 10 accounts set up via pop3 and many important emails that I need in the phone and since I depend on emails daily I really don't want to mess anything up.

If I did delete all settings and imported them again would this issue not happen again?

And is there any other way to fix it without having to delete accounts?

Mail seem to work just fine in all other ways.

The reason I need a solution is because it takes up a lot of unnecessary space that would be much needed for other things. As for now I need to keep deleting music and apps if I want to capture video without emptying my earlier photos/videos.

Your explanation is quite helpful.

When you send such large emails with attachments, they're saved in your computer in the case there's a system problem. You can actually see the Mail and the amount by opening Spotlight (Command-i), and type Mail; a long list of recent email messages will appear, subjects, and even the location of the mail folders.

As long as you use your email with video, your machine will contine to grow somewhat over time. As long as it's working fine, there's nothing to worry about; your machine is taking care of the filing. But if you notice slowdowns, disconnects, missing messages, or failure - that's when we're getting problems.

If you want to make sure your data is secure, I strongly suggest you perform regular backups. Otherwise, it's possible to lose essential data.

As a normal user there seems no way of "officially" reporting this bug to Apple.

In order to file a bugreport online, one needs a developer-account.

In the Apple Store they said they can't file bugs, and told me to call Apple Support.

And since I bought my device long ago I can't call Apple Support for free anymore.

So I used the next best thing, which is Apple's feedback-form for their devices... Clearly not what it was designed for, and I didn't get any answer either.

Looks like we're gonna have to keep restoring our devices.

Weak, Apple. Weak.
