What is reasonable is to enable Find My iPhone under Settings > iCloud, make sure you have regular backups to iCloud or iTunes, and then if the device goes missing, immediately contact your carrier to suspend your service and use the Find My iPhone feature on www.icloud.com or the Find My iPhone App on another iOS device to remote wipe your device.
