Error 4005 fix for Windows 7

Thank you! This worked on an iPhone 6+ my wife had used for years on her MacBook, but I had taken it a year ago and loaded iOS 10.2 on it from a Windows PC; until I tried to put 10.3.1 on it last night from PC (to pair to a series 2 Apple Watch). Stupid Windows 'bricked' the phone (phone stuck on the 'illuminated' black display after software extraction in iTunes; waited 30 minutes, hard reset = brick!). After trying DFU mode, rebooting the PC, etc I plugged it into my wife's iMac and it restored\updated in 25 minutes or so (relief!). I then plugged it up to the Windows PC to restore my backup settings\apps\music\etc. Stupid Windows!

This is the reason why error 4005 happened when updating your iPhone to your iTunes.

It's because your iPhone iCloud back up settings is turned on.

Before updating the latest iOS on iTunes make sure your iCloud back up turned off on your iPhone.

And set your iTunes settings in back up to my computer before updating.

iPhone iCloud back settings is used only when updating using wi-fi of your iPhone.

Mine came up with this error and my phone was stuck on the connect to itunes. I updated windows and now it seems like it is trying to restore it I hope!! Its not stuck on that screen anymore. Funny because something kept stopping me from restarting my phone

Yes, my phone also not getting on, it doesn't go further to itune-restore, before during upgrading iOS there was error 4013 now it's 4005, I’ve tried all said methods and suggestions published at apple and all other sites but still couldn't make my phone alive...I think this problem isn’t solved yet and if you follow any apple’s presenter that throw you at link erro1611 to follow up, that’s totally worthless and wastage of time... hope someone will help us by telling a way that really could fix this problem... hope 😟

Hi there, had the same issue with my iPhone 5S. Think it's because half way through an update, my computer decided to turn itself off.

Tried everything in these forums and nothing. Error '4005' kept coming up at the end of trying to restore my iPhone on iTunes again and again, and the phone was basically a brick with the iTunes USB prompt appearing.

Decided to roll back on a System Restore -- Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore -- just before the time in which I had done the update on the iPhone, (choose your restore point wisely as it could roll back quite a lot of changes otherwise). Think I then reinstalled iTunes too, tried the restore again and it worked. Just throwing it out there incase anyone else has been going down the same issue!

I had this same issue for about 12 hours.

Fixed now here is how.

I have ipad 4 wifi 64gig

i tried everything. DFU IN AND OUT.

RECOVERY IN and OUT.

NOTHING WORKED UNTIL THIS.

i got a program called semi restore. it only works for firmware 6.1 through 6.1.2

my ipad 4 was firmware 7.0.4.

I ran the program as administrator and then plugged in my ipad. while it was identifing my ipad it exited recovery mode for me. i didn't even run the program on my ipad.

had same error (4005) on 6.1.2 iPhone4 32gb trying to restore it to 7.0.4.. had "recovery mode" on the screen and couldn't return back to iOs.. so i put my phone to dfu mode and restored, et voilà

how do you turn off icloud if you cant get your phone on?

I could fix error 4005 on my iTunes/iPhone following these steps:

Useful:

- disconnect iPhone from PC

- close iTunes

- PC > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Apple Mobile Device Support

- Apple Mobile Device Support > repair

- Wait 1 minute.

- disconnect all USB devices currently not used

- connect iPhone using original USB cable, connected DIRECTLY to the PC, no external USB Hub

- start iTunes

- iTunes should ask to recover the iPhone > recover

- Hope...

Plan B (successfull for my device):

- install iTunes on another (older) PC

- remove SIM card from iPhone

- If SIM PIN is enabled: Insert SIM in another phone and disable SIM PIN

- disconnect all USB devices currently not used

- connect iPhone to old PC using original USB cable, connected DIRECTLY to the PC, no external USB Hub

- start iTunes

- iTunes should ask to recover the iPhone > recover

- Hope...

If successfull: iPhone has factory settings (no user data)

- disconnect iPhone from old PC

- insert SIM card

- connect iPhone to default PC

- iTunes > Restore (will take a while)

All data and settings recovered successfully on my device (same as on the date I performed the last backup)

Device: iPhone 5S, iCloud deactivated

Problem: Error 4005 communication error (related to USB?)

Problem occured during Update from iOS 7.0.4 to 7.0.5

New PC: 2 weeks old only, Windows 7, 64Bit, USB3 (USB3 activated/deactivated in Bios)

Old PC: Windows XP 32Bit, USB2

I hope this is useful for some of you

A slightly different version which worked for me

1. abandon your Windows computer ( no way to fix this on a Windows machine) and find a Mac (in my case a Macbook Pro) with iTunes
2. Connect your ipHone (doesn't matter if your restore is in a loop on your phone: iTunes Mac will recognize it immediately)
3. Let it restore your iphone to factory settings
4. Don't let it configure your phone! Once restoring to factory settings is complete disconnect from your Mac
5. Go into iCloud on your phone and deactivate "Find my ipHone"
6. Connect immediately with your Windows machine (Windows 7 Pro 64 bit in my case)
7. iTunes will now recognize your phone and it will ask you if you want to configure it as a new phone or if you want to restore your backup
8. Choose the backup which was done before your update went wrong
9. Let it work for a while and VOILA!
