I am setting up my new iPhone 5s and am trying to sync it to my iTunes account but I'm getting an error saying "This iPhone could not be restord. An unknown error occured (17). What does this mean & were do I go from here? My phone will only display the screen indicating that I need to connect to iTunes.

This is a host for apple.com, you gonna need the line if for instance you want to install an update manually using the .ipsw file, so if you trying to install using the .ipsw file and u getting issues u must put back the line, might sort out your troubles
Make sure that you don't have any *.apple.com records in /etc/hosts. I had the same error.

I would have never figured out that a line in the hosts file would cause me to be unable to restore my iPhone. Weird.

this is usually a program called 'tinyumbrella' or some program that wants to point your itunes to another ip rather than apple when restoring so the fake apple ip can 'sign' older firmwares.
you can also uncheck that box in this program to fix this.
My iPad Air bricked after I tried to update to 7.0.6 and wouldn't restore and you were spot on with the tinyumbrella check box fix. immediately after, I was good to go. Thanks so much for taking the time to help.

actullay i try to update my iPhone 5s iOS from 7.1 to 7.1.1 and on restor process it stuck... but now after nano tool modification it is working just fine...
