A1256 dock and Iphone

I have a A1256 dock and small white remote. I put my Iphone 4s on the dock and connect the dock to my HiFi amp. I can use the remote to Play,Pause and move backwards and forwards on music tracks, but I cannot use the menu button to select a different music file.

Is this normal, or will I have to use the newer universal dock with the newer remote. Also will the newer remote work with my A1256 dock and will it enable me to use the menu button
