It is really important to note that postscript is an option (~$1000) for this printer, yet Sharp provides ONLY postscript drivers (PPD files) for Macs. Your printer doesn't have the postscript option installed.

There are several makers of office printers who make the assumption that Macs can only print via postscript (or maybe the real assumption is that they should make Mac users pay extra?).

I would try adding the printer using IP > HP Jetdirect, and driver Generic PCL.

Apple doesn't create printer drivers, they just provide the central server for them. Sharp makes only postscript printer drivers (actually, PPD files) available.

Just double-checking - you Added ( + ) the printer, clicked IP, chose HP Jetdirect protocol, entered the printer IP address, then down where you select driver, you selected generic PCL (that's a HP-compatible page language that most office printers support)?

  1. I would delete whatever printer drivers you have by:
    1. go to System Preferences > Print and Scan > Print
    2. Do control-click on a printer in the left column
    3. select Reset printing system
  2. Then if you do Software Update in the Apple Menu it should see the printer and download and install the appropriate printer driver.
  3. If that doesn't work report back, I have a few other ideas.

Thanks for the help guys but, it's still not allowing me to print other than PPD... I have a copy of windows 7... Yeah I know, it was given to me... I don't know if I could run windows 7 per boot assistant and download the driver and just use windows for work purposes? I hate that I am even talking Microsoft but it's better than the alternative I guess? Or if there is any workaround.... Why wouldn't apple have support for something like this?
