How to combine two albums in one ?

Hi, I bough a new mac and with it came the fastideous task of re-adding all the albums to iTunes once again.

Everything was going fine until I added a album which has 2 CDs 14 tracks in one CD and 5 more in a Bonus CD what happen when I added the CDs to the library was that iTunes made two different albums.

I tried changing the info, the name of album, the name of the artist even the release year everything was equal, yet iTunes didn't combine the two albums in one as it should.

After I selected both albums went to get info, options and in the Part of a compilation I selected Yes, which made the smaller album to disapear, the songs are in the library, but the album disappeared from the album library.

Any suggestion ?

All you need to do is mark the first CD as disc 1 of 2 and the second as 2 of 2 in Get Info. If all the other things are the same ( album name, date of release etc ) then they will appear as one album but marked disc 1 of 2 and disc 2 of 2. In column view, if not already, you can can this column. In album view they will appewar in the one 'drop down but separated within.

Hope that helps.

I have just spent a considerable amount of time trying to get 3 discs combined. The original import combined discs 2 and 3 but left disc 1 as a separate album. The collection is called The Encyclopaedia of Music - Best of Blues. I kept trying all sorts of changes but nothing seemed to work and the two "albums" looked the same. I finally started just flicking between the two keeping an eye on the title line and noticed the spacing seemed odd. A closer inspection revealed that disc 1 had the "o" in both places with an uppercase "O". Fixed that but still no combine. A bit more flicking between showed the play button shifting position and found that disc 1 had an extra space at the end of the album name. Deleted that and bingo, all three discs now combined as one entry!!! I offer this to help anyone else encountering this sort of problem.

yinyangoz - that's a good start, but to make it "easier" copy one field (i.e. name) from get-info and paste it into the other albumn's same field(s). I started with composer and ended with the albumn's name and then it was like magic that they became one albumn.

I just wish iTunes would let several get-info windows be open at once to make that easier.

Well, I did this and ended up with both albums corrupted when I viewed them in Album view. Lots were blank. When I changed the disc number in one (they both remained after the operation) a different set appeared! I went into my playlists and surprisingly they were all there. Any advice on this appreciated before I have to delete the albums and music and reimport them. Thanks. PS just noticed that the album with the complete set has tracks numbered 1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3, etc. So it shows 20 tracks totalling 60 tracks in all. Do I delete the other album (has just one of the discs)?

NO, in fact now I see I am wrong I've got one album with the 60 tracks with the numbering I indicated and the other with the single CD in fact NOT combined after the operation. But the tracks are now all shown. I really can't see how to combine albums. Having spent a lot of time sorting a previously screwed iTunes I am wary of actually doing anything (and the Help is utterly useless as well!).

This should be the correct track listing, which makes your last image above the tracks for Disc 4 of 4. You'll need to use Cmd+Click to gather up tracks from the other discs and apply the correct disc numbers. Once you've done that select all 76 tracks and Get Info. On the Details tab tick the box Album is a compilation... then on the Sorting tab Set Album Artist & Sort Album Album Artist to Various ArtistsX and the Album & Sort Album to Sax for RomanticsX. This should merge the tracks into one album which also shows the discs it is composed of. Use Get Info again to remove the trailing Xs. I would normally leave Sort Album Artist and Sort Album blank.

I have done as suggested except was'nt sure about track numbering. Ended up with them in one Album with a Disc 2 and Disc 4 but can't see a way to renumber the triple track numbers into different Discs. Would be nice if I could remove the Disc Nos. so they are in one block numbered sequentially but can't see where it stores this (have removed Disc No. from Info but still remains on screen). Not too bothered as I can now load this onto my iPod. Thanks for your time.

As I said, you can use Cmd+Click to make a selection of all the tracks that should be on say disc 1, then use Get Info to set the disc numbers for those tracks as 1 of 4. Repeat with disc 3. My personal preference is to use unique track numbers over the whole album, however this either requires a certain degree of patience and persistence or the use of a script to automate part of the process. If I had this album in my library I would number it thus:

Disc 1 of 4
1. Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart
2. Too Much Heaven
3. I Live for Your Love
4. One Moment in Time
5. Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You
6. The Long and Winding Road
7. The Girl from Ipanema
8. Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue
9. I Found Someone
10. Like Dreamers Do
11. Piano in the Dark
12. These Dreams
13. On This Night of a Thousand Stars
14. Ebb Tide
15. Missing You
16. Don't Give Up On Us Baby
17. Follow You, Follow Me
18. Theme from 'Love Story'
Disc 2 of 4
19. Blue Moon
20. We've Got Tonight
21. I'm Not in Love
22. How Deep Is Your Love?
23. Heartbearker
24. Endless Love
25. Hello Again
26. True Love
27. Can You Feel the Love Tonight?
28. Blue Eyes
29. Stand By Me
30. Against All Odds
31. Candle in the Wind
32. Time
33. To All The Girls
34. The Greatest Love of All
35. She's Out of My Life
36. You Win Again
37. Love On the Rocks
Disc 3 of 4
38. Don't Cry for Me Argentina
39. Strangers in the Night
40. The Last Farewell
41. Woman in Love
42. Theme from Lawrence of Arabia
43. La Paloma
44. Surfin' USA
45. Strawberry Fields Forever
46. Moon River
47. Come Fly With Me
48. Heaven Knows
49. Yesterday
50. El Condor Pasa
51. All My Love
52. Baker Street
53. Billie Jean
54. Black Velvet
55. Bridge Over Troubled Water
56. Carribean Queen
Disc 4 of 4
57. A Groovy Kind of Love
58. Charleston Girl
59. New Kid In Town
60. Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?
61. Man in the Mirror
62. Knock On Wood
63. Lovely Day
64. If You Think You Know How to Love Me
65. Yes Sir, I Can Boogie
66. Isn't She Lovely?
67. The Way You Make Me Feel
68. Don't Bring Me Down
69. Fly Robin Fly
70. With a Little Help from My Friends
71. Swinging Saxophones
72. Crazy Little Thing Called Love
73. Free
74. I'm Still Standing
75. I'm Your Man
76. Africa

This was all slightly easier when the Get Info control box responded to keyboard commands for the next or previous track.

Must say I don't like the way this forum works; I have to log-on every time (Safari) and then it takes me to the top of the post instead of here I was (at the bottom asking to Reply!). Anyway I tried numbering but it kept reordering as I went which made it impossible to sequentially change the boxes. If it allowed sorting on Info. boxes that would be better and then not interfere with the ordering as changes are made that would be useful. Still, I haven't that sort of time available and they are all there in my playlist. Cheers once again.
