Touch typing/ergonomics: which fingers for the apple (command) key?

I touch-type, too. I use my left-hand thumb on the Mac; left-hand pinkie on Windows. Strangely, I never use my right hand for any of the "function" keys (control, CTRL, option, command, etc) except for "return".

I use my index finger for every key.I gotta learn how to type. 🙂

For me it feels pretty natural for my left thumb to move over from the space bar onto the left Apple key (open apple for those who remember Apple\\ days... 🙂 ).

I'm sure many people have many different ways of doing it though.

Yeah, I use my thumb, mainly because if I use my thumb, I can reach an entire half of the keyboard with my index finger, which allows me to use keyboard commands with one hand. (You'll notice an apple key on both sides of the keyboard.)

I use my middle finger for the apple control key. I usually have my fingers on the touchpad about the time I want to use the apple key. I am a strange touch typer, however.

Really, it is all based on what YOU are comfortable with. If you find it ackward, if 1,000,000 people say its right, its still wrong. Experiment.

Touch typing is one of those beautiful, adjustable skills. 🙂

Once you find one that is comfortable, just make certain that you keep doing the same thing, or you won't learn the keys perfectly. 🙂

yeah i use the left thumb as well. i use the left thumb for all of the buttons on the bottom come to think of it, it just came naturally, wasn't something i was taught in my high school typing class (which used Macs by the way :))

For years I've been using:

left handle little finger for "control"
left hand fourth finger for "option/alt"
left hand middle finger for "apple/command"

I rarely use the function key, but, on the MacBook keyboard I would use the left hand little finger for it too.

These fingers seem to involve the most natural way to go, and the shortest travelling distance, if you start off with your fingers in the "home" position on the keyboard (ie first fingers on f & j respectively etc). I'm no great typist, but this seems to work for me, anyway.
