iMac 24" Shuts down immediately after chime

iMac 24" Shuts down immediately after chime

iMac 24" White Late 2006. EMC 2111.

When I turn it on you can hear the fans and HDD rev up.

The opening chime plays.

Everything turns off after displaying for a fraction of a second the grey screen with the apple logo.

Power button unresponsive (wont turn back on) till I unplug it.

I'm going to leave it unplugged for the next 2 days and try some trouble shooting steps after.

Does anybody know what might be happening? I have searched and saw posts about not getting to the chime, or hangs after the chime or unexpected shut downs, but nothing specific to what's happening to me.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Sound like a hardware issue, please run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode at least 3x back to back. If errors appear then you can choose to either get the machine repaired at your local Apple Store or AASP or replace it.

Unfortionatly I could not get into AHT.

I plugged in my original USB keyboard to it and hitting the D key or any other key combos I know of did nothing. Rev, chime, flash of screen then crash. Each and every time.

(They keyboard does work as I tested it on my macbook first)

You need your original Install discs for your machine, if you don't have them any longer then you can either take it in as suggested earlier or call AppleCare and for a modest fee they will replace them. You will need a credit card and the machines serial number.
