My Macbook Pro mid 2012 model is stucked up at the Grey White Screen showing Apple logo and a status bar. The Gear starts spinning and the bar starts loading but after sometime the power goes off automatically. I have tried the Internet recovery and other options including the 'Command + R' and the 'Option' key at boot up but everywhere its the same problem. Please i need urgent help as i have not backed up my data anywhere else and i need my Mac for certain important tasks. I have tried the 'fsck -fy' on the terminal but each time it stucks up at the 'Checking catalog files' and gives an error

Disk0s2 - I/O error' stating that the 'Machintosh HD cannot be verified this time'.


Can somebody please help me out in this regard? I am using Macbook Pro mid 2012 model with OS X Mountain Lion.

I'm sorry it's not going well. I'm no expert unfortunately and not sure what the Disk I/O error is. Mine said 'Disk full error'. Can't remember exactly everything I did before I finally found what worked, but I was like you trying several things that didn't worked. One thing I read about and did was to write /sbin/mount -wu / in single user mode (gives read/write access) Not sure it that changes anything for you?


Perhaps try a hardware test first of all to see if there are any issues. Hold D whilst turning on the macbook to start the testing.

The procedure I mentioned shouldn't take long at all, a couple of seconds, or as long as it takes for you to write it basically. (Have you double-checked if you type it exactly as I wrote? I mistyped a couple of times.)

Hi Elingrr,


Following your guidelines, I ran a Apple Hardware test. The test starts normally but after about 95% Completion it hungs up and keeps on at 95%. So, what do you think? My Macbook is having hardware failure. I have launched disk utility, and over there it is showing my Hardware capacity and all the data on my hard-drive. This means that it cant be a hard-drive failure?

It is very probably a disk problem, but hopefully "only" software problem on the disk, like inconsistencies in the disk directory. The boot disk is disk0s2.

There is a Recovery disk, but I gather that this one does not go, because you did try already the Internet Recovery.

You probably already tried this:

Start the Internet Recovery and then choose DiskUtilty, do "repair disk", it takes time, 1 hour maybe. And hopefully you will end up with a repaired disk.

Hi Lex,


In the Internet Recovery, the first screen i get is the Globe spinning, then it asks me for the WiFi credentials and then the Globe starts spinning again with a status bar and after sometime it gives the error '4403F'.


I have tried the 'Disk Utility' option via the 'Option' key at startup. The Disk Utility shows me three options including Re-installing of Mac OS X Mountain Lion and Repairing the Disk option. I have tried to Repair the disk but it gives the error that the Disk cannot be repaired. What should i do now? Does it mean that i have to format my drive. IF i format, will i be able to install a new copy of Mac OS X via internet. I dont have any Apple store nearby as i am sitting in Africa.


Help needed Guys!!

You will probably not be able to to install OSX via internet because your internet connection seems not to be good enough.


When you start with the Option key you get the boot menu, and choosing the Recovery disk means that you start from the Recovery partition on the main disk (the one partition that you do not see in disk utility). But that Recovery Partition has a menu with 4 entries, the first one "Restore from TimeMachine" and the fourth entry is "Repair disk with Diskutility".

If you do not get that menu or not complete, there is a problem, because the disk is corrupted.


When you start up with CMD+Option+R, it is connecting to the internet Recovery and the rest is the same (but slow). But you need a good internet connection for that.


So now we have to repair the disk, but we do not have the possibility to do that without a good internet connection.

Repairing the disk is probably good enough. Formatting is only possible with Disk Utility from a recovery patition (ie no here), and then you need a reinstall but you do not have good enough internet (that download is about 4GB).


What disk do you have in there (SSD or HDD)?.

Do you have an external disk with backups? Do you have TimeMachine backups? Do you have somebody with a mac and do you have a cable to connect the macs?

Thanks for such a detailed reply.


By starting from the 'Option' key i do get the Disk utility menu with 4 options. I have tried to use that to 'Verify' the disk and to 'Repair' the disk. But when i try to Repair the disk it gives a message in 'Red' that 'Disk cannot be repaired, Copy your critical data and then reformat the disk and copy that data back to it'. This means that the disk is having some software issue. Rite?


I have a 500GB HDD on my Macbook. By using Internet recovery, the message i get is the '4403F'. So now how to go about it. I am getting the option of 'Recovery' in the Disk utility 4th option . It gives me the 'RAID' - 'Erase' - 'Recover' option. I have an external drive that i think i can use for the copying of data. I tried to copy it in the USB but it said something about the 'Partition' system and gave an error. If i get the data recovered somehow then how can i Re-install the Mac OS X Moutain Lion.

Repair disk impossible: more than just a corrupted file catalog, prepare for loss of the disk.

The options in Recovery Disk Utility: you do not have Raid (that is good), do not erase (it deletes everything, if it works at all on your broken disk), the Recover option will not work since your disk is unrepairable.

There you are. Prepare for a dead disk.

You can try to save files from your broken disk, but that would mean that you boot from an external disk, that must be a bootable disk.

When you have a bootable disk the best possibility is to do as follows: boot from that disk, start Finder and see if you can see the broken disk, if so, start copy all (you must have enough space to copy to) and let it copy: you very probably get only one chance. If you do not have enough space select all folders that you want to keep and copy them all in one go.
