iPhone 5s 'This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably...' help?

What is happening here?

I keep getting this stupid message even when no charger is plugged in!

I'm using the official charger that came with the iphone 5s box. I have other lightning connectors and thought maybe switching them would fix it but it hasn't.

Is there something wrong with my 5s? Do I need to clean the port on the bottom of the phone? I've only had the 5s for about a week. I am using official apple chargers.

This started happening after my batter drained and I put the phone on charge. Is it a software bug?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.s. The message ONLY appears when it is not on charge. Which is studpily weird.

It is silly to think Apple is doing this for liability reasons. First, for as long as phones have been out third party cables have been sold and work fine without issue. Target, Amazon, Walmart, BestBuy, etc are not going to sell defective products and ruin their own reputation. Secondly there is no way a phone cord could electrocute you, simply not enough current to do so. Third, why would you sue Apple if your 3rd party cord failed? On what basis would you try to blame them? Your reasoning is flawed and has no facts. This is purely about market share and forcing you to buy Apple products to boost revenue. A cheap trick on their customers that any reasonable person would see for what it is, a marketing scam. For the record I own 3 i pads, 3 i phones and a Mac. I also own more Apple stock than any other company so I get it, these guys know how to make money but thry went too far with this strategy and consumers have a right to be upset. Can you imagine LG TV or XBox doing an update and making your Extension cord not work, or your HDMI cable not work? I spent $24 for a longer, quality cord for my iPhone car charger AFTER the cheaply made Apple cord broke and had to throw it away after the update.. Absurd. Buy all of the Apple cords you want to but don't try and pretend this is anything other than about market share and revenue...

Your ignorance is astounding:

And I nor would you, apparently, sue Apple because your 3rd party cord failed. I can guarantee you that the poster would, however. If you spent as much time on these threads as I do, you would see that Apple gets blamed for everything that can go wrong in a person's life. Irrational, yes - impossible - no.

This is not a strategy - it is a safety measure. You don't have to purchase an Apple-made cord - just one that has been certified by Apple:

And if you used an extension cord on your LG TV or XBox that was not UL-approved, then whatever happens would be your issue and only your issue.

Ok, so if as noted the charger is what caused the problem in what you cited not the cord then why does the charger not require certification? The fact remains my 'uncertified' cord worked just fine with my unauthorized and uncertified car charger but now it is in the trash can so Apple can cover itself rather than worrying about the burden this places on the consumer.

By the way, my certified apple cord works just fine with my uncertified car charger so go figure.. I guess the next update should look for a chip in the dangerous chargers not the cord. Better order one now Before the next update rolls out.

And I only use UL rated extension cords... My point was those Manufacturers are not forcing me to buy a certified cord.

DO you really believe a cord can be certified without a fee to Apple when they use a proprietary chip in the cord???

MY last post on this topic. They just need to tell their customers upfront that only Apple certified items will work with their devices.

Here's a simple fix that works - sometimes the Apple chargers worked sometimes and sometimes they didn't. If you plug the Apple charger into the phone and it won't charge pull it out and turn it over and plug it back in. The solution is elusive because there's some tension on the cable when you turn it so you wouldn't think to do it, particularly with the car charger.

Im not sure if anyone has solved your problem. But I might have a fix for you. I have the same problem, iPhone 5 and bought cheap chargers at the gas station. After a week they stopped working completely and I get the error message. Turns out, it's just a bad connection due to lint from jeans and shorts. Grab a paperclip and clean out the charger socket on the phone. Get all the lint out that you can. Those chargers will work perfectly and you will not get an error message. Hope it works for you, it made my day when I did it.

I am having the same issue...my iPhone 5S charger stopped working, and I found a converter at the local store (Sold out of iPhone 5 chargers), And it will not work. It says "Cable not certified...", even though I'm using my Apple iPod charger usb cable that connects perfectly to the lightning charger.

Nice I've seen many people reply with "so go buy a Real apple charger instead of a cheap version..." Well just FYI, not everyone has that as a possibility depending on when / where their iphone 5 charger stopped working.

This forum / thread is meant to notify Apple of the HUGE amount of users having this issue, AND for SOLUTIONS to the problem. If there isn't one, I understand...but there's no reason for posters on this thread to state the obvious of "go buy an Apple-made charger / adapter". Sometimes that's NOT an option, and not everyone wants to spend $25-30 on a new charger and/or adapter that is Apple-made every 2 months when their charger breaks...AGAIN.

I've had my iPhone 5S for 8 months and I am now on my 6th (soon to be 7th charger). That's absurd, and there is NO reason the adapters should not work properly.

IF you have a solution, please post it...but if your advice is to go buy an Apple made charger / adapter, please don't fill up these threads with your preaching.

I think this shouldn't be too big of a problem, if an item breaks or doesn't work correctly, contact the manufacturer or (re)seller. They are obligated by law to provide you with a warranty service. The manufacturer or (re)seller has to provide you with an alternative, this could mean they fix your charger, or replace it. It could also mean they service your iPhone or even replace that as well. If your charger breaks every 2 months, you should be able to get a new one from the store you bought it from, every 2 months. Simple as that.

Also, if you bought a knock off from a store in the US, and that doens't work (and they don't have nasty disclaimers saying it might not work on all devices), you should be able to get your money back as well.

The USB cable is the one that you can use a universal cable for - the charger is not. You can get an Apple-certified charger from Amazon or many online sellers. So, sorry that you don't like the answer, but it is what it is. Sorry that you think that safety features built into the device for your own protection, or for the protection of the device is inconvenient, but it is not going to change. You don't purchase electronics in the US that are not UL certified - you won't be able to purchase a charger that is not Apple certified.
