May 19, 2014 2:23 PM in response to SamsMochiby Westcoaster35,An FYI, as part of my profession is investigation into fires, I have personally looked into this as our area has had 4 fires (though you cant call them fires), linked to Iphone 5's. The cords burned up, but cannot produce enough heat to do an damage beyond the cored itself. There have been dozens of cases in the US of Lightning Cables burning up I know of.
The cords in question were Lightning Cables from Apple. 3 of them were purchased within 2 months of the fire, while the other was from the original puchase of the phone.
I've also looked into speculated fires occurring with knock off cables and there has not been one to date. This is not to be confused with unlicesned "Chargers", those could have the risk of fire if they are not built with the proper protection to prevent any type of surge.
To understand why a cable may or may not overheat, catch fire, or burn up.. you have to understand what puts a cable or wire at risk of over-heating a fire. Two things to look at:
1. Does the wire or cable have a break in the line
2. Is the material used to sheath the wire made for it's intended purpose.
We know from Apple's lightning cables that (2) the sheathing is not made for it's intended purpose because (1), they very easily frey and break.
This is why there are many reported cases of Lightning cables burning up. If your Apple Lightning cable has any type of a notch, frey or break in the line close to where it plugs into your iphone 5 (like many have), if you can manage to make it charge, touch the end of it and see hot it gets, its pretty bad.

May 21, 2014 9:20 PM in response to Westcoaster35by Joramw,I discovered something susspicious with this proble: We have two Apple 5c phones and they both were charging just fine with three None-Apple cable, until today at 3pm. Both phones would not charge with either of the three cables. They were just fine at 2pm. 2 iphones and three cables. However, they both charge well with the original iphone charging cable. Ooops! what's going on here?
Can someone mathematically inclined calculate the odd of such a coincident?

May 22, 2014 8:56 AM in response to Joramwby caljim,@Joramw, this is the prevailing issue with this problem. It comes out of nowhere and corrolates with no events of any kind. This happens with official Apple cables or others. Myself and many others on this thread used only the cable that came with the device. It seems to happen randomly. This kind of software bug is a ***** to find a fix. If there was a distnict pattern it would have been fixed long ago.
There are medical issues like this also. Every doctor has a different treatment and none of them solve anything. In this case there is often a physical bug but no one has it figured out yet.

May 23, 2014 9:11 AM in response to SamsMochiby sorcererbg,This is an incredibly stupid move by Apple. Nobody could convince me that it's about security and safety...
I bought two Lightning to 30-pin Adapters to use my two 4s chargers with my 5s iPhone.
Price on Amazon - 3$:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IA95L2A/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8 &psc=1
Price on Apple for the same thing - 60$
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD823ZM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter
This is just a piece of metal and plastic. It's ridiculous.
Apple, please remove this ridiculous software. I also have a car charger. Should I just throw them away because I paid a bunch of money for your new device? That's how you reward loyalty?!!

May 29, 2014 7:17 AM in response to Mshirkby Acollins10,MShirk, the answer to your question is, they tell you to buy a new phone. This happened to me last week. My phone was 26 days out of warranty. $270 for a replacement phone without even being able to tell me what happened to it. I told them no thanks, I would absolutely not buy another phone that is obviously faulty if the hardware is going to stop working at 1 year and 26 days with no explanation.

May 29, 2014 7:51 AM in response to tonefoxby AndroidBound,tonefox...no it's not just a piece of metal and plastic. But you are completely missing the point aren't you? Yes the iPhone is the best interface (IMHO) but this BS with making us pay for overpriced accessories is just bad business.
How many more "official" phone covers do you think would sell at the store if they didn't insist on charging over 5 times and in some cases (ha...I made a pun) over 10 times the price available online or at other retailers?
I don't have to be a psychic to divine what that ******* VP of marketing (let me be clear...I'm not saying he/she is an *******...ALL VP of marketing are ********...not just the apple one) said at the meeting, "Well we can't stop the cases, but Jones here in development has figured we can change one line of code and those idiots will HAVE to buy our chargers...hahahahahahaha!"

May 29, 2014 8:01 AM in response to AndroidBoundby tonefox,I'm not missing any point, just refuting the mistaken statement "This is just a piece of metal and plastic.".
You might like to ease up on the use of asterisks and imagination.

May 29, 2014 8:21 AM in response to tonefoxby AndroidBound,You are attempting to deflect the argument. Everyone knows it's not a piece of metal and plastic. And I will continue my fanciful ways and imaginations all I want. Here's a few quotes just to annoy you. """"""""""""""""""""
And a pun...
"Did you hear about the optometrist that fell into a lens grinder and made a spectacle of himself?"
If you keep it up I'll start imagining more things....

Jun 16, 2014 2:29 PM in response to SamsMochiby anthonyfromshiloh,Bottom line - it's a nuisance and users should have at least the right to disable this message in the settings.

Jun 17, 2014 3:55 PM in response to SamsMochiby sloanSeven,For me it was lint in the iphone jack. It finally stop charging altogether. 5 minutes with a paperclip resolved the issue, guy the genuis bar says he gets two of these a day,
-
Jun 22, 2014 10:01 PM in response to SamsMochiby jodieding,I have the same issue, but it seems to have only started happening after I dropped my iPhone into a puddle of water. I'm pretty sure the water got into the lightning connector port and thus the notifications have been popping up. The notifications slowly went away the first time my phone had water damage, and has since returned as I dropped it in water again.
Not entirely sure if this is the root of the problem, but seems to be the reason why my phone is acting up (completely my fault an not Apple's)

Jun 26, 2014 9:01 PM in response to sloanSevenby imac,Same for my iPhone 5S. The 'not certified' problem with official Apple chargers & cables was fixed by simply cleaning out the lint in the lightning jack.

Jul 17, 2014 12:33 PM in response to Michael Battenfieldby punkass94,I think its dumb that we cant use the "uncertified" cables. some are way more durable than the apple cables and for less money. I am sick of apple already. Cant wait to trade over to Samsung.
